Mosque site row mutilates American ideals with a Taliban like efficiency... 2 September...

Date: 2010

From: Scott, Thomas, 1947- :[Digital cartoons published in the Dominion Post]

Reference: DCDL-0015493

Description: The cartoon shows America's Statue of Liberty with a mutilated nose. Text reads 'Mosque site row mutilates American ideals with a Taliban like efficiency'. Refers to the row over whether a new mosque and Muslim community centre within two blocks of Ground Zero - the World Trade Centre where al-Qaida terrorists struck on 11 September 2001. Right-wing protesters accuse the organisers of insensitivity towards the families of the almost 3,000 people who died in the twin towers. The plan for a Muslim centre is the brainchild of the Cordoba Initiative, a group set up after 9/11 to build bridges between moderate Islam and the West. Its name alludes to the Spanish city that was famous for its religious toleration under the Moors. President Obama in support of the project said "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable." Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Ground Zero Intolerance... "It's great WE all agree on something!! COME ON DOWN... Ther...

Date: 2010

From: Hodgson, Trace, 1958- :Digital cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0015570

Description: The title of the cartoon is 'Ground Zero intolerance..' An angry crowd of Christians and Muslims yell at each other to 'Burn in hell!' as a Christian threatens to burn the Koran and a Muslim the American flag. Above them rears an enormous devil who is delighted that they all agree on something and says there is plenty of room (in hell) for everyone. Refers to the Park51, originally named Cordoba House and controversially referred to as the "Ground Zero mosque", a planned 13-story Islamic community center and mosque to be located about two blocks from the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. It would replace an existing 1850s Italianate-style building that was being used as a Burlington Coat Factory before it was damaged in the September 11, 20attacks. The proposed facility's design includes a 500-seat auditorium, theater, performing arts center, fitness center, swimming pool, basketball court, childcare area, bookstore, culinary school, art studio, food court, September 11 memorial, and prayer space that could accommodate 1,0002,000 people. There is controversy over the siting of the mosque so near Ground Zero. There is a colour and a black and white version of this cartoon Quantity: 2 digital cartoon(s).

Description: President Bush of the United States stands behind a podium giving a presidential speech in which he slams terrorists for giving no thought to the human cost of their actions. Behind him are two huge stacks of coffins which rise into the sky like the Twin Towers; they are labelled 'Civilian' and 'Military' and refer to the number of lives lost in the Iraqi War perpetrated by Bush.
