The exhibition title is taken from Ashworth's journal where he misquotes from John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost": "The world was all before me / where to choose my place of rest". Description: A hydrographic chart sketching the entrance of the Tauranga Harbour, depicting the path of the ship 'Fanny', around Mount Maunganui and Waikouai, with full sounding information. Identifies fortified pa site named 'Tumaitai Pa', the accompanying diagram depicts six whare or houses, and two tree-like storage huts. On the other side of the water, text reads 'the chief of this place anutra (sic)'; text on water reads 'going to Tomonalap (sic) Pa'. Denotes several sentences of text on geographical features, hydrographic detail and information on safe entrance and exit to the harbour. Catalogue card: 'Made by Thomas Wing in the schooner Fanny. Shows tracks, navigations notes.' Note on map reads 'Copied from a rough tracing belonging to Mr Wyld, May 12, 1841.' Note on map reads: 'The Fanny's track into Tauronga (sic) June 1835 south by compass from the Mayor Island.' Description: Head and shoulders caricature portrait of Wellington Merchant and Member of the Legislative Council, John Martin. He was known in the Legislative Council for his failure to speak up a great deal. Martinborough (Wairarapa) and Martin Square (in Wellington) are both named after him. The portrait is in the form of a painting on an easel. Beneath it is a humorous verse 'Lord Johnny Martin - who a silent part in - our Legislative Council plays - / Tis said, tho' lame there, in another Chamber, they in the Empire sing his praise, / All know that figure, attired de rigeur, white waistcoat, silk umbrella, flow'r. / Tollhurst and Christie on either fist, he represents the monied pow'r, / He's honest, thorough - but Martinborough - how honeycombed for many a mile, / By those thieves of rabbits - with their borrowing habits, has much reduced his goodly pile.'.
