Photographs of Mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe and family photographs

Date: 1906?-1954

From: Mosen, Neville Herbert, 1914-2004: Photographs

Reference: PAColl-0670

Description: Photographs taken by Neville Mosen of Mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe between 1945 and 1954, and Nicol family photographs and other photographs taken in Marton by unknown photographers in the early 1900s, possibly collected by Neville's wife Vera, whose mother was born Florence Nicol in Marton. PAColl-0670-1-1 shows several men standing inside a partially constructed house. "Marton" is inscribed on the back. PAColl-0670-1-2 shows several men and boys, one girl, and a dog standing outside John Murray Nicol's Marton Bakery. Several of the men are wearing aprons; one is holding a sack of flour and another is holding a large woven basket. The girl and one boy hold shopping baskets. A bicycle stands propped against a hitching post in the foreground. It was likely taken between 1906 and 1910. PAColl-0670-1-3 is a photograph of a group of men standing on the doorstep of what appears to be an official building of some kind. All the men are wearing suits except two men at the front of the group in working aprons, one of whom is holding a plasterer's hawk and finishing trowel, suggesting that the photograph may have been taken after a stone or plaque laying ceremony. It is inscribed on the back "Marton". PAColl-0670-1-4 is a photograph of a group of young women, possibly including Florence Ward (nee Nicol). It is inscribed on the back "Mrs Ward Tauranga" and "We think that this photo was taken sometime about -[illegible] 1907 - or 1908 Will be thinking of you all Gratis as always Nell Niell". PAColl-0670-2-01 to -2-10 are photographs taken by Neville Mosen; most are inscribed on the back, and one is stamped "N. H. Mosen Photographer Raetihi". There are two of Mount Ngauruhoe erupting in 1954 and four of Mount Ruapehu erupting in 1945, taken from Raetihi, Makaranui and National Park; one is hand-coloured. Other photographs show a view from a boat on the Whanganui River and various views of Mount Ruapehu from Makaranui and Raetihi, one entitled "The Long White Cloud" showing lenticular cloud over Mount Ruapehu. John Murray Nicol appears in the Wise's Directory as a baker in Broadway, Marton in 1906 and 1908. John Murray Nicol was Florence Nicol's father. Quantity: 19 b&w original photographic print(s) 1 handcoloured. Physical Description: Black and white prints of various sizes, some mounted, and one hand-coloured.
