Description: Aerial photograph, produced by NZ Aerial Mapping Ltd., Ref. No. A/S 2218, Flown 27.3.69, of L.W. Tonkin's farm in the Matakohe area, NE of Kaipara Harbour, used as a base map to which the farm and paddock boundaries have been outlined in red and detailed in a key. Hand-written notes in the margin give details of neighbouring houses with name references. Features include a trig point with height in feet, cabbage trees (location of), height in feet (of a hill), silo, to Matakohe, Ruatuna. A.P.B.W. believed to be the cartographer. Hand-written notes included in the margins are as follows: "Mainly hill country (sold 1947 to Crown for rehab) leading to 'The Swamp' on Ruawai Flats." "Matakohe Beet Farms, Ltd. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Nora Elizabeth Kenworthy-Thompson; original land grant to John McBeth; verification when farm was passed to Murdoch McBeth, and later to Nora Kenworthy-Thompson; line of ownership, 1860-2005; narrative of family history and family pedigree (5 generational chart); photographs John McBeth and his wife Ann came to New Zealand from Nova Scotia with Ann's father Murdoch Mclennan. They were granted 160 acres of land at Kauri, Northland in 1867. He broke in the land and in 1874 built a homestead on the property. John grew vegetables on the land and over time acquired a small dairy herd. On his death in 1900 the farm was taken over by his son Murdoch and then by his daughter Nora who married Ralph Kenworthy-Thompson. See also Burtenshaw, May. From castle to cave. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Norman (Jock) Finlayson accompanied by supporting land documents; brief history of the farm ownership; photographs and cadastral maps Original owner was Roderick Donald Norman Finlayson who purchased 243 hectres in the Mangakahia Survey District from D McLeod in 1907. He farmed the property until his death in 1960. His youngest son Leslie took over and formed Homestead Holdings Ltd with his son Norman and their wives. Leslie retired in 1978 and Norman John (Jock) and Chris Finlayson took over the management.
