Description: An oral history project concerning Rangiatea, the Māori Anglican Church at Otaki. Comprises interviews in which John Moffat, Netty Wilson, Tahiwi (Buster) Carkeek, Louise Carkeek, Hira Royal, Mere Kena, Andre Baker, Hohipuha Cook, Paddy Rikihanal, and Marie Hakaraia discuss the history of Rangiatea, the burning down of the church in 1995, and the rebuild project. Topics include the vestry, various ministers, church experiences, the extent of the pastorate, the Church's early history, the return of local soldiers from World War II, the opening of Te Wananga o Raukawa, kaumatua, Carkeek family history, issues about rebuilding and the significance of rebuilding the Church, traditional Maori beliefs versus Christianity, Te Rauparaha and Christianity, the Anglican Church, the interaction of Ngati Toa and Ngati Raukawa with government and the loss of land. A joint oral history project by Te Wananga o Raukawa and Te Roopu Whakahaere o Rangiatea. Funded by an Oral History grant from the Department of Internal Affairs. Rangiatea Church at Otaki was built between 1844 and 1851 under the guidance of Te Rauparaha and missionary Octavius Hadfield. It was the oldest Maori Anglican church in New Zealand until it was burnt down in 1995 by an arsonist. A replica of the church building was opened in 2003, which houses some of the treasures salvaged from the original church building. Description: Abstract of a speech given to Forest and Bird in Helensville on 23 November 1994 by Marina Fletcher, co-author of Maori history of South Kaipara as contained in the Heritage Study. First waka arrived in the area (later named Kaipara by Tama te Kapua) in 1250. Lists waka Mahuhu o te Rangi, Arawa, Aotea and Pukanui. Describes the importance of Kaipara as a tribal travelling route and also of Shelly Beach. Discusses the attempt by Ngati Whatua to get into South Kaipara by intermarriage. Talks about Hau Moe Wharangi coming to chase Ngati Awa out of South Kaipara, being killed, his death avenged by his great grandson Tumupakihi who settled in the Helensville area. Discusses Te Makiri and other pa. Discusses the invitation by Te Taou chief Te Otene Kikokiko to Pakeha to settle as a protection against other Maori, his sale of land to the McLeods, meeting Samuel Marsden and befriending Reverend Gittos. Mentions the Shelly Beach Meeting House and the destruction of its carvings by Reverend Gittos. Notes some of the carvings are now in the Auckland and British Museums. Describes Parakai as the essence of Kaipara - Te Tino o Kaipara. Mentions Kaipatiki which was sold as a Maori Land Block. Comments on the area's fame for its fish, hot water and cultivations. Describes how Maori disenchanted with Christianity began to follow Ratana. Talks about the Maori Land Court and the Otakanini Topu. Describes how leases with farmers were broken, the Topu was formed and runs a cattle, sheep and afforestation property.
