Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George W Barltrop (who was at one time president of the Nelson Camera Club), between 1899 and 1902. Scenes include group portraits of Labour Day celebrations by the Missions to Seamen in 1900 and 1901; Prince of Wales birthday celebrations in 1901; members of a camera club (possibly in the Hutt Valley, associated with a Mr Stevens); and views of Island Bay and French Pass, with close-up views of the anchor and a sailor standing at the steering wheel on a fishing boat. In the South Island there are views of the Blenheim Road, Havelock Road, Wakapuaka Road, Cable Bay, and Bishops Peninsula (?). Two images show Indian troops who came to New Zealand as part of the tour by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Description: Edna Davidson was born in Herne Bay in 1910. Her father was Charles Ravenhall and her mother Mary Rashleigh, a tailoress. Describes how her parents met, married in Auckland in 1907 and lived in Herne Bay. Recalls boating and fishing as a child and attending plays and concerts at His Majesty's Theatre where her father was first violinist. Describes education at Bayfield and Meadowbank Primary Schools. Recalls the 1918 flu epidemic and having `gas stuff' blown down their throats as a preventative. Discusses how her father did not believe in higher education for girls so she left school at the age of twelve and worked at Smith and Caughey's lace department. Talks about a subsequent job with Remuera draper Amy Moore. Describes learning to drive and meeting her future husband, W T Davidson who she married in 1929. Gives details of her wedding dress. Talks about her husband's contract to dig soil for the waterfront road, his work excavating for the Civic Theatre and their financial sacrifice to purchase a navvy (motor shovel). Describes taking this machine down to Napier for work after the 1931 earthquake and subsequent work at Galatea. Describes moving to Kaukapakapa and sometimes living from their Dodge truck. Talks about moving to Woodhill in 1935, getting a farm which was part of the Casement Aickin estate and her husband continuing to do some contracting. Describes building a house in 1944 and building up a dairy herd. Talks about the war effort at Woodhill, the school, the Country Womens Institute (CWI) and their social life. Description: Photographs taken in the district around Loughton (Essex, England), including wedding scenes of the marriage of Thomas Berry Cusack Smith and Winifred (nee Maitland) in 1896, and later, scenes with their young daughter Maia Wilhemina Cusack Smith. The latter part of the album includes images of life and events in colonial Samoa during the time T B Cusack Smith was posted there as British consul, with views of the consulate, general views of Samoa, and portraits of several Samoan dignitaries. Several scenes show various performers at the British consulate in a farce by John Maddison Morton. As well, one photograph shows the unveiling of a statue of Queen Victoria at the Legislative Council Buildings in Pietermaritzburg (South Africa) in July 1890. At the end of the album there are a number of images of Cambridge and Dresden, circa 1889. Many of the photographs were taken by Thomas Berry Cusack Smith, but some are identified as being taken by professional photographer C C Cutchey (Loughton), and by friends in Samoa, H W Bowker, and Colonel W L Samuells. Description: Two cartes de visite of unidentified Pakeha women and one of a group of ten women and a man on the steps of a church; a cabinet card of a woman in a wedding dress; and three photographs of delegates to the Women's Christian Temperance Union Conference in 1940. One of these is a large group photograph and the other two are of delegates out walking, one by the docks and the other at the Centennial Exhibition. The photographer of the cartes de visite is William H Macey and the one at the Centennial Exhibition was done at the Leicagraph Studio at Hotel St George, Willis Street as a souvenir photograph. Description: Photographs of the Nelson Region, Wellington Harbour, Featherston, Ruamahanga Valley and the Rimutaka Hill Road, probably taken by George William Barltrop in 1899 (Identification from other albums in this sequence). None of the people in photographs are identified, but include several scenes with a woman and her husband; a group portrait at a wedding; two older women in a garden; a picnic group (6 women, one man and three children); two women carrying baskets of plants, with a man wheeling a bicycle (on the road to the Nelson Reservoir); and three young boys in a garden. A sequence of twelve photographs includes two men, members of the 2nd Contingent, at a military camp (possibly in the Nelson area), preparing to leave for the South African War, in 1899; rows of horses near tents at the camp; soldiers marching; a Nelson street with a banner reading `For Queen and country.
