Description: Colour slides taken by Jeremy and Diana Pope, chiefly relating to the Maori Queen's visit to Ruatoria in January 1968. Features the powhiri at Mangahanea Marae in Ruatoria. The Maori Queen, Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, is featured, as are the warriors (including Sonny Taniwha Waru and Whio Motu) performing the wero. Also includes images of manuhiri and tangata whenua, the marae setting, rehearsal of the wero, a poster relating to the debutantes ball (taking place as part of the visit), and, unrelated to the visit, photographs of rock carvings at Murupara. Jeremy and Diana Pope were in Ruatoria doing research for the Mobil Guide Books and asked at the local dairy about the wherabouts of a wharenui they wanted to photograph for the travel guides. They were told that the Maori Queen was making her first visit to the East Coast, so they went to the marae and took photos. Pope recalls that there was some tension at the event because elderly people were standing in the sun for a long period of time. Kawakawa mai Tawhiti (Te Araroa) - Kaumātua Kōrero oral history project

Description: Five interviews conducted by Rochelle Mackintosh in 2022 to record the early personal experiences of six kaumātua growing up in and around Te Araroa on the East Coast of the North Island between the 1930s and 1950s. The interviewees were Adelaide Clarke, Maaka Tibble, Sir John Clarke, Sydney Clarke, and Tauoha Takanui and George Clarke. Many of the kaumātua are associated with the Te Whānau a Kahu and Te Whānau a Hinerupe hapū. Topics covered in the interviews include: family, upbringing, education, employment, and daily lives in the Te Araroa area. The interviewer also identified the following concepts as being "interwoven thoughout their experiences": identity, belongingness, kāinga (settlements), whenua (land), awa (river), tikanga (customs), whānaungatanga (kin relationships), manaakitanga (generosity), matauranga-a-hapū (sub-tribe knowledge), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
