Kawakawa mai Tawhiti (Te Araroa) - Kaumātua Kōrero oral history project

Description: Five interviews conducted by Rochelle Mackintosh in 2022 to record the early personal experiences of six kaumātua growing up in and around Te Araroa on the East Coast of the North Island between the 1930s and 1950s. The interviewees were Adelaide Clarke, Maaka Tibble, Sir John Clarke, Sydney Clarke, and Tauoha Takanui and George Clarke. Many of the kaumātua are associated with the Te Whānau a Kahu and Te Whānau a Hinerupe hapū. Topics covered in the interviews include: family, upbringing, education, employment, and daily lives in the Te Araroa area. The interviewer also identified the following concepts as being "interwoven thoughout their experiences": identity, belongingness, kāinga (settlements), whenua (land), awa (river), tikanga (customs), whānaungatanga (kin relationships), manaakitanga (generosity), matauranga-a-hapū (sub-tribe knowledge), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship). Description: Reproduction of a wood engraving by Laing. The artist is possibly J S Polack, who published the image of Haupatu in `Manners and customs of the New Zealanders', James Madden & Co., Leadenhall St, London, 1840 Vol II page 1. Head and shoulders portrait of a Maori woman with curly hair, and small amount of tattooing on her nose and chin. She is wearing a cloak over a European garment with a soft collar. Other Titles - Haupatu, chieftainess of [Waipaoa ?] Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Laing Polack traded from Kororareka (Russell) from 1831 to 1837. He returned to England in 1837. His second book `Manners and customs of the New Zealanders was published in 1840, shortly before he returned to New Zealand in 1842.
