Description: Photogprahs of New Zealand circa 1890s to 1900s, probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first sequence includes scenes around Auckland harbour, including Rangitoto Onehunga, with one view of passengers on board the ferry `SS Takapuna'. One photograph shows a group of young Maori standing on the bank of the Whanganui River (four young men under an umbrella). Wellington area views of Pahautanui (Pauatahanui), Horokiwi, Lyall Bay and the Wellington Heads. On page 873 (the album pages run from 856 to 895), there is a postcard with heads of George William Barltrop and his wife Emma Jane Barltrop, with a collage of images relating to the Missions to Seamen. Slipped beneath the postcard is the death notice for Emma Jane Barltrop (died 24 September 1954). There are views of the Rimutakas from the railway line; a flock of sheep being herded along a road in palmerston North; three people standing outside a wooden bungalow in Palmerston North; and there is a view of another house in Feilding. The river mouth at Oroua; the grounds of the Wanganui Race Course (with white swans on the lake; a woman feeding a peacock, and a woman under an umbrella, walking on rail tracks beside the sea at Castlecliff; followed by three views from a boat on the Whanganui River, one a view of Upokongaro, with the church spire just visible, and two of groups of Maori waiting on the riverbank. Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. The one of the dove is captioned "examples of my father's natural history photography which he greatly favoured". Complete total of photographs unknown Pat Lawlor and Keast Burke corresponded on the subject of Australian photographers and writers (see MS-Papers-1280 etc) which is possibly how Lawlor came by these photographs. The rest of the collection includes: a street scene in front of the old railway station; a cycling race; men rowing and canoeing; children playing in a swing park; a brass band playing on board a steamer; various beach scenes including donkey rides; train pulling into Kaiapoi station; a small bach; two girls next to a waterfall; trams and a cyclist going past the Jubliee Clock Tower; the front facade of St Paul's Presbyterian Church; three views of the old Public Hospital next to Hagley Park; the Chamber of Commerce building on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street; a copy negative of a carte de visite of a couple kissing; a monument incorporating a tiki on a tall pole and other maori carvings (location unknown); a man at the doorway of his shed with an array of gardening implements; two men pulling a covering back from a hangi pit; the cathedral with a number of trams in front; a tram advertising Ballantynes; a kitchen interior showing a range with kettles on top and a cupboard and dresser with crockery; six Maori on horseback possibly in a procession; a porter bringing a cart of luggage up to a train; five men giving friends piggy backs on the beach; sheep being driven past stock yards; the Avon River; a crowd outside the Avon Rowing Club; Wilson the maltman's horse and cart crossing a bridge; and two images of a harvest festival in a hall with a painted back drop and sheaves of corn arranged in front of it.
