Description: River rapids in the foreground with a cabbage tree and a taller tree to the left, and two nondescript trees to the right. Low bush-clad hills in the middle ground and Mt Egmont or Taranaki rising symmetrically in the centre background. The preliminary sketch for Heaphy's watercolour Mt Egmont from the Southward (C-025-008). There are several marked differences. The mountain is less symmetrical than it has become in the watercolour; there is a ragged cabbage tree, but no tree-ferns; the number of framing trees in the pencil version is much smaller than in the watercolour; and the shape of the bush-line and the river are different. Description: Shows men on horseback ranging of hillside at left foreground, a stand of bush in right foreground, overlooking a plain, with Mount Taranaki in centre distance. Title found on page [55] of diary. Previously given the title ["Military on horses. Taranaki. Mt Egmont in background. 1864-1866]. See similar view, painted 15 March 1865, at E-510-052/053. Other Titles - Military on horses. Taranaki. Mount Egmont. Inscriptions: Verso - bottom right - [Title]; Verso - bottom right - Major Brooke R.E.; Capt Betty R.A., Lt Campbell R.A.; Sergt Phillips, R.A. and self According to Williams' diary notes for 14 March (page 45), the army moved to Pa Manutahi on that day, and on 17 March on page [50], "in the afternoon rode out with Betty, Brooke, Campbell and Sergt Phillips to a point a mile in advance of the outposts and got a sketch looking towards Mt Egmont". Description: Several young men working on the trunk of a large tree, while others hold firebrands and fire rages in the bush beyond. A flock of birds are in the sky, top left Very similar to 'Burning the bush, Taranaki, 1856' a watercolour at E-453-f-008. 'Bush burning' has a similar trunk fallen across the centre and a man with a firebrand, with the fire just behind the people and the large trunk. The arrangement of the figures and of some surrounding trees and plants is different in 'Burning the bush' and a stronger atmosphere of fear of the fire is present in the latter.
