There are also two images of ploughing with a team of six horses; a group of people outside a house; and a pool in the bush (these last four may not be connected to the others). Description: Four photographs of barber Walter Clement (Wallis) Quinlan, at work, taken in 1958, 1963, and circa 1963. One photograph was taken by the Dominion newspaper, and the others by unidentified photographers. The images show interior scenes of the barbershop, and include various men getting a haircut and shave. Two images are the same (PAColl-10319-2 and P AColl-10319-3); one of these images was originally in a frame. Includes one print of Quinlan, on his 80th birthday, 13 September 1963, giving the former Commissioner of Works, F. M. H. Hanson, a haircut, at Mr and Mrs Les Clarke's barber shop in Lambton Quay (PAColl-10319-4). It is inscribed on the front "Many Happy Returns, from the victim Fred Hanson". It is also inscribed on the back, "Taken on 80th birthday 13 Sept 1963". The image was published on the front page of the Dominion newspaper on 14th September 1963. Description: Helen grew up in a family of five children, besides her parents, her Aunt Janie also lived with them. She describes the household, the day to day activities, games and outings. She talkes about schooling and then her career as a hairdresser. Helen established her own hairdressing business at a young age and continued it over a period of 40 years. She describes her skills, how she learnt them and the rapport she had with customers and staff. She sums up her feelings and about hairdressing thus; "I loved my work, still like it, still love doing hair..." The interview covers many aspects of Helen's life, her family, friends, career, creative interests and the importance of her religious faith. Description: Joyce Jamie was the eldest of six children of John and Nora Holden. She spent her childhood and attended primary school in Central Otago and then moved to Lumsden to live with an aunt so she could attend Gore High School. When she left school she wanted to study Home Science but due to lack of finance was unable to. Joyce trained as a hairdresser in Dunedin and then moved to Alexandra. There she met her future husband John Jamie. She continued working until her first child was born in 1940. The family then moved to Christchurch for a short period because of her husband's Air Force work during the war. After the war Joyce and her family moved to Alexandra where she and her husband opened a jewellery business which they ran together. After her husband's death in 1962 Joyce continued working in the business. Apart from the business her interests included the church and gardening. Now retired Joyce continues to live in Alexandra.
