Description: Record of the tour of the Pacific Islands by members of the New Zealand Legislature in 1903 Photographs taken by Henry Winkelmann of Auckland (numbers 1, 38, 50-51, and 79) and G A Read of the NZ Government Printing and Stationery Department Very few of the people shown are identified Other Titles - Visit of members of New Zealand legislature to the Cook and other Islands, 1903 Inscriptions: Album page - The voyage, of which the accompanying photographs form a partial record, was undertaken in April-June, 1903, for the purpose of giving Members of the New Zealand Legislature an opportunity of seeing the Cook and other Islands, which were annexed to the colony in June, 1901. In all fifteen islands were visited, eight of them being within the extended boundaries of New Zealand, and the remaining seven belonging to one or other of the adjacent groups - viz., Samoa, Tonga or Friendly Islands, and Fiji. Description: Album of photographs, postcards and newspaper cuttings relating to Samoa and Tonga, circa 1920s. Many of the photographs, and some of the newspaper cuttings have limited captions, or no identification at all. At the beginning of the album there is a signed Christmas card from George Spafford Richardson, with a photograph of him and another European standing in front of a fale with a large group of Samoan men. One image of Robert Louis Stevenson ([p 2]), is signed by him, and another one shows the tomb of Stevenson and his wife Frances Matilda (Aolele). There are a number of views of Vailima, Stevenson's home, one early view showing Stevenson on the verandah with a group of women and another man standing above looking over the balustrade. Description: Shows a beach scen lit by a sickle moon. In the left foreground stands a man with a fishing spear. His outrigger canoe is pulled up on the beach in the centre foreground. Beyond him is a large dark rock. Date and probable artist taken from the novel "The scapegoat", by George Harold Davis (b 1892), describing the life of a Post Office employee who spent some time as postmaster on a group of Pacific Islands, after the First World War, and before the Depression. Description: Compiled by S Percy Smith. Album includes 42 pages of photographs of Samoan scenery, towns, buildings, and portraits. Photographers represented include Burton Brothers, Thomas Andrew, J Davis, and A & W. As well as Samoa, this album includes photographs of men and one woman in the Solomon Islands; their ceremonial dress, weapons, and a house with an ornately woven patterned wall, and thatched roof. The last two photographs show men with weapons, wearing masks. Several photographs show images relating to Robert Louis Stevenson. One (on page 32) shows "R L Stevenson & party". Stevenson and his wife with European and Samoan men and women are seen standing at the back of a large group on the steps of the verandah at Vailima. The verandah is draped with fern leaves. The group seated in front on the stairs includes Samoan men, mostly holding axes, and a group of sailors holding musical instruments. Description: A born digital oral history project commissioned by Te Au Mārie Trust of the Bay of Islands and Te Tai Tokerau Northland to commemorate Tuia 250 ki Tai Tokerau 1769-2019. The Mapping Our Stories oral history project aimed to record the traditions of waka taua and voyaging waka that first landed on or explored the Tai Tokerau coast. Interviews conducted by Jeff Evans, and transcribed by Kate Martin and Jeff Evans. The interviewees are: Tā Hekenukumai (Hec or Sir Hector) Busby, Joe Conrad, and Stanley Conrad. Project received Award in Oral History funding from Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage in 2017. Title taken from item. Tuia Encounters 250 New Zealand organised national commemorative events held in 2019 to mark the 250th anniversary of first meeting between Māori and British during Captain James Cook’s 1769 voyage to New Zealand. Four Landfall Trusts co-ordinated regional events based around the four sites where Cook and the crew of the 'Endeavour' made landfall.Te Au Mārie 1769 Sestercentennial Charitable Trust (TAMSCT) was established to manage events in Bay of Islands and Te Tai Tokerau Northland between January 2018 and early 2020, with a focus around a flotilla visit by a replica of Cook’s 'Endeavour', waka hourua and Navy ships. The Trust commissioned the Mapping Our Stories oral history project to record tribal traditions of voyaging waka, sightings or meeting with Abel Tasman, James Cook, Jean Francois Marie de Surville, and Marion du Fresne, and the traditions of waka taua Ngātokimatawhaorua. The interviewees, Tā Hekenukumai (Hec) Busby, Joe Conrad, and Stanley Conrad, are prominent figures in the revival of waka taua and waka hourua and traditions of Māori and Polynesian navigation.
