Top left is `Mr Wright doing wrong' showing a man abandoning a woman and three children to go off with another woman and 2 children. Bottom left, is `Biscuit and gingerbread or the rival bakers' a scene in Shire Lane, possibly about rival newspaper publishers. The central view is a theatrical scene, `A Kean manoeuvre to pay old debts of Drury is it's self again' a reference to actor Edmund Kean and the Drury Lane Theatre; top right is partially titled `The gouty Adonis' and possibly refers to the Prince Regent at the Brighton Pavilion with Mr Punch. Description: Maurice was born in Wanganui into a family business started by his grandfather and continued by his father and uncle. Outlines family background and beginnings of F Whitlock and Co Ltd. Refers to J Bush, later becoming Bush, Boake and Allen, an English condiment firm which carried Whitlocks for 50 years. Father was also involved through his in-law family with Newsomes Bakery, joining with Stan and George Newsome to form Newsomes Ltd. Maurice started in the family business as a casemaker, going to foreman, factory manager and finally Managing Director. Describes the process of cooking and bottling sauces and explains how Whitlocks always harvested and preserved pulp to use, throughout the years, in the making of their pickles. Compares with Watties. Talks about the change in trading patterns in his lifetime and explains the place of the merchant warehouses who were the trading power. Whitlocks had no connection with grocers, but now it's contact is with the large supermarkets. Describes the effect World War II had on the business, operation and sales shrank, mainly through lack of sugar. Maurice was in Home Defence and was sent to Trentham, eventually wound up as an orderly in the Third General Hospital in Italy. Describes his orderley work and the effect it had on his religious beliefs. Was a lay Methodist preacher and describes what this involved and talks about the Pacificist Movement within the church which he doesn't believe in, and gives his reasons. Description: Don McLennan of Palmerston North reminds us that at one time the baker in the country was as important as the blacksmith or the wheelwright and that there were over a thousand bread bakeries in New Zealand, while now [1973] there are less than ninety. Recalls his days as an apprentice in a small town bakery before his boss sold and moved to a provincial town where he took over a large bakery. Describes the new bakehouse with its twelve big ovens and a mechanical dough mixer. Description: Andrew Watson Rae recalls early life at West Calder, Scotland; school years and paper run, especially during winter time; social life in Scotland, which included vigorous dances; involvement in soccer, with reference to quarter final game at West Calder and referee from Trinidad; and activities of the Free Church of Scotland. Gives family background - father a coal miner. Joined the Royal Navy as a cook, serving in Mediterranean minesweeping 1946. Refers to minesweeping incident involving `Albania' and Britain'. Talks about being demobbed from Navy and friends who became professional footballers. Recalls hearing of jobs in Merchant Service delivering ships to New Zealand, and was on delivery voyage as second cook and baker. Reference to New Zealand Government offering 100 pounds (sterling) to the crew to stay in New Zealand and decision to accept. Recalls meeting with Bill Fox, Secretary of Seamen's Union, later MP and Minister of Marine, who offered the job of bread making on the `Pamir' sailing to United Kingdom. Describes the journey and refers to Captain Burfeldt. Tells the story of the `Pamir' later going down off the Azores with only two survivers. Description: Interview with Cliff Turner who was born in 1921 at Hastings and raised in Gisborne. Mentions family moving to England and schooling there before going to sea at 15. Talks about being baker's boy in the catering department on the SS Inanda travelling the West Indies. Recalls Jean Batten was a passenger. Explains on the outbreak of war, the crew painting ship grey before return to England. Mentions losing discharge book in Cardiff air-raid. Discusses other memorable trips: waiting outside Montevideo when the Admiral Graf Spee blew up on the River Plate, as well as leaving London on the Rimutaka during the Dunkirk evacuation, 1940. Mentions transporting troops on requisitioned MV Aorangi and on Winchester Castle sailing to the Middle East via Cape Town. Talks about taking photographs in spare time and going skating during shore leave, as well as meeting local people. Talks about joining the hospital ship Llandovery Castle that took part in the invasion of Sicily, 1943, and the Italian mainland, 1944. Describes collecting wounded soldiers from barges and taking them to Algiers where the ship obtained food. Explains one of the wounded was Major General Kippenberger, the only other kiwi aboard ship, and returning him to Southampton. Recalls visiting Kippenberger in Roehampton. Later mentions Kippenberger assisted him obtain an overseas bursary to study at the National Bakery School in London after the war. Explains being assistant baker on Llandovery Castle, describing shifts and demanding conditions in the galley and bakery. Admits shipboard training benefited his career. Recalls transporting TB patients from England to Canada; many of the patients died and were buried at sea. Talks about participation in D-Day and being anchored off Omaha Beach and then going to Cherbourg. Mentions meeting wife when sailing on a Liberty ship. Discusses VE-Day photograph of him at the head of a celebratory march in Piccadilly that also appeared in the New York Times. Talks about post-war life at bakery school and baking awards before returning to New Zealand in 1947. Mentions managing Adams Bruce Bakery, Wellington, and then working at Griffins biscuit factory.
