Description: Photograph of a group of Māori subjects beside a tree in front of a small house, taken circa 1932 by John Batchelor of Whangarei. The group consists of a very old woman reclining on a mat on the ground and covered with cloaks, and being supported by another woman. A girl is sitting beside them and a young man is standing behind holding a large framed photograph of a young woman. Inscribed on the back of the print is 'Te Tauhou April 1932'. The old woman is possibly Te Tauhou Aoripi Pirihi of Takahiwai. Identification of Te Tauhou based on inscription and her apparent age in the photograph. Title supplied by Library. It then developed into a joint project between Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori, Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust, the Māori Women's Welfare League, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission), and the Dowse Art Museum for an exhibition and publication. The exhibition was curated by Elizabeth Kerekere for the Dowse Art Museum, and later toured various galleries around New Zealand from 2000 to 2002. The publication was Kāumātua | 'Anō te Ātaahua | Honouring the Gifts of Our Elders' (2001) and was edited by Kerekere.
