Description: Mark Harawira, born in 1925, discusses his rugby and rugby league experiences in the Bay of Plenty and Auckland. Describes life on farms in Whaaro and Mangataua. Talks about life on a farm in the 1930s, and describes eeling and fishing on Papamoa beach and sleeping the night on the beach before distributing his catch to relatives. Relates his Whakapapa, explains origin of the name Mangataua (Mangatawa) and relates stories of the times of Kupe and Toi and other canoe arrivals, and some Te Arawa legends. Describes visits to town and once a year trips to Tauranga from Kairua. Explains how he heard about rugby from his father, and that he listened to radio commentary of the 1937 Springbok tests. Talks about watching rugby league at Auckland's Carlaw Park through a hole in the perimeter fence between 1938-1942 until young people were shipped home due to the perceived Japanese threat. Reminisces about rugby from his first games for Poroporo and Paroa juniors as well as Rugby league games for Manukau - especially in Ruatoki. Talks about his senior rugby career for Paroa, playing in championship winning teams and also in representative teams including Maori Rosebowl Rugby. Talks about contemporary rugby and rugby league and discusses the future of the games in the Bay of Plenty and New Zealand. Samoana, legend of legends: An oral history of the Samoana Rugby League team 1964-1967

Description: An oral history project documenting the story of the Samoana rugby league team of Dunedin. Comprises four interviews conducted by Aaron Talavou Taouma, with assistance of Elena Losa Lome, with former players and family members of players. Interviewees are: Papali'i Dr Pita Ulitau Taouma, Janice Margaret Taouma, Su'a Falaniko Su'a, and Elena Lose Lome. Abstracts of the interviews were completed by Jason Brown and Elena Lome. Project received Award in Oral History funding from Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage in 2015. The Samoana rugby league team formed in Dunedin 1963-1964. The team won the Otago Premiership in 1964 and 1966 before being disbanded in 1967. Both Aaron Talavou Taouma and Elena Losa Lome are children of former Samoana team members.
