Description: Photographs record in detail the process of restoring and refurbishing Parliament House, the General Assembly Library, the wooden Government Departmental Building, and a section of mosaic in the entrance hall of the Public Trust Building. There is also a group of photographs showing, in general and in detail, the travelling exhibition designed to show New Zealanders what was being done to their government centre. The albums are well documented and most of the craftspeople and others involved in the project are identified. These are part of a larger collection which includes notes compiled as part of the historical research for conservation reports on the restoration and refurbishment. There are copies of various conservation reports and some specifications for the work to be undertaken, including copies of related architectural drawings. Also progress reports from Cook, the site representives of Howard Tanner & Associates, are included. These are held in Manuscripts and Archives. Arrangement: Transparencies at PA12-1738 to PA12-1763. Negatives at 1/2 180984 F - 1/2 181010 F, and 35mm, 24082 - 25041. Rod Cook was an architect with The Ministry of Works. In 1980 he prepared a report for the stengthening and refurbishment of the Parliamentary Library. This was not acted on at the time but formed part of the background work for the later restoration of the building. From 1986 to 1989 he worked for the General Manager of Parliament preparing the architectural brief for the restoration, and with Chris Cochran of the Historic Places Trust, a conservation plan for the Parliamentary Library and Parliament House. He retired at the end of 1989. The restoration job was won by Warren and Mahoney. They subcontracted Howard Tanner and Associates of Sydney as conservation architects. And they subcontracted Rod Cook to be conservation architect on the spot for Parliament and the old wooden Government buildings. Most of these photographs are Rod Cook's records of these jobs executed between 1992 and 1996. Description: Scrapbook compiled by Graham Eglinton in circa 1980s about the restoration of his cottage in Carterton. Contains black and white and colour photographs, taken by mainly unidentified photographers, of the cottage before and during restoration, and some typed captions. Images show interior and exterior views, the replacement of totara weather boards, re-roofing with cedar shingles, restoration of verandah and fretwork, and installation of a septic tank. Some people are shown. Scrapbook also contains correspondence and newspaper clippings about the cottage, and a scrap of newsprint (dated 1892) that was retrieved from the wall lining. Loose accompanying material includes photographs of a horse-drawn cart, a photograph of the cottage taken by M. C. Duston, mounted on card titled "Settlers cottage", handwritten research notes on the history of the land and the cottage and related area and people, photocopies of newspaper clippings, photocopy of floor plan and proposed alterations in 1983 and news clipping for the 2003 sale of the cottage. Title supplied by library Graham Eglinton bought and started restoring (in 1982) the 1870s house at 1341 High Street in Carterton known as "Daniel Jensens' cottage". The cottage was sold by his son Ray Eglinton in 2003. Graham Eglinton's son Ray Eglinton, and other children and adults (probably Eglinton family members) are shown in many images, they are shown both working and relaxing at the cottage. They are frequently shown with tools and wearing swandris or plaid shirts, tool belts, overalls or jeans, and boots. BMX bikes are shown in several photos. One image shows a child posing with his head and hands in wooden stocks next to another child with a bottle. Also includes a copy of a 1916 photograph of the cottage with four children and a bicycle in front of it (one of the children is identified as Rita Nelson), a sketch of the cottage by an unidentified artist, and newspaper clippings. Loose accompanying material includes photographs, photocopies from a publication, and an invitation for Graham Eglinton to afternoon tea at their Carterton residence 'Bushbury' from Alison and Tommy Underhill (1996).
