Description: The comprehensive scurrility of this satire reflects the spirit of the magazine `Scourge', but not the attitude to the war of the Opposition who maintained that Napolean's intentions were pacific. John Bull, here depicted as a bull crushed by taxes, is sacrificed by Castlereagh and Vansittart to the Bourbon cause. Louis XVIII goes to war in armour and mounted on a mule with the head of Talleyrand. The Regent's reputation suffers the usual bruising. John Bull tortured by Vansittart and Castlereagh with new taxes and the Corn Bill. 2. `Cockrane & Broushouffe or a return to quarters'. Lord Cochrane being returned to prison after his escape; he was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for conspiracy. 3. `An if and a butt or how to escape'. Cochrane's escape. The title may be a punning allusion to the release, and subsequent re-arrest, of R G Butt who had been convicted with Cochrane. 4. `The lyon and the unicorn fighting for the crown etc'. Description: John Bull with one arm hacked off and it is being presented to Napoleon as `Hanover' and the other (`Ireland') in the process of being chopped of by an axe (`Catholic Bill'), etc. A satire indirectly relating to the so-called Congress of Prague which was held during the Armistice of Plaswitz to discuss peace terms. It opened in 12 July and was abortive, since Napoleon was determined to continue the war unless he could retain his conquests. Description: Satire on the engagement of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Princes Charlotte. An allusion to the £60,000 a year settled on the couple. The property tax, referred to by Vansittart (in black robes) had been abolished in March. The harridan on the balcony is Princess Charlotte's mother. The Prince is shown in tattered clothes being offered a pair of pink trousers to wear by John Bull. Charlotte, only child of George, Prince of Wales, later Prince Regent and George IV was born in 1796. She married Prince Leopold Saxe-Coburg on 2 May 1816. A French copy of this print is in the British Museum Collection.
