Description: Cartoon of six panels, showing two men talking about crowd behaviour at a rugby match (the test against South Africa at Athletic Park Wellington on 29 August 1981, where the All Blacks lost to the Springboks 12-24). Their conversation reports on the activities of various coloured squads of protesters and the riot police in attendance. Description: Cartoon strip showing scenes of defeated rugby players from the various provinces "conquered" by the British Lions rugby team: Wyrapper-Bush [Wairarapa-Bush], 'Awkes Bay, East Coast Poverty Bay, Wellin'ton, Wanganui, Taranaki, Manawatu-'Orowhenua, Waikato, North Auckland, Auckland. At lower right, two men talk over a beer, and one wonders just what was in the food parcels that New Zealand sent to Britain. The title "Sad hearts and coronachs" may be a play on the title of the 1949 British film "Kind Hearts and Coronets". A coronach is a Scot or Irish dirge or lamentation for the dead. Although the Lions won games against provincial sides they were beaten 3-1 in the four-match test series. Early memories recalled include: school days, punishment, steam train on Sundays, Malting company, which was a big influence in area and University years. Mentions Miss Fairbrother (teacher) and Oscar Lewis (new Principal of Hillmorton school). Recalls teaching in Gisborne and first exposure to Maori culture. Mentions week-end course at Waikato University and first experience of being welcomed on a marae. Talks about travel experiences in South America, visiting a lot of archaelogical ruins and meeting many Chilean refugees. Describes the many experiences in Paraguay and Argentina, meeting many Peace Corp people [American]. Gives details of itinerary through Europe and Africa and being robbed in Tamanrasset, Algeria. Recalls return to New Zealand after four years, getting involved in CARE [Citizens Association for Racial Equality] and commencing work for CORSO, secretary to Bob [Robert] Consedine (local organiser).
