Landscapes too, are mostly fully described, with peaks and routes traversed marked on the images. The album includes a map of the Rakaia-Mathias River area, drawn by E. Porter; a map of the "Three pass route" across the Southern Alps, drawn by Len Boot (p. 003); two extracts from the New Zealand Alpine Journal hand-written by J D Pascoe (from Vol. IV, no. 18, p. 209-210; and Vol. IV, no. 18, p. 213-214); and a photograph of a painting by A E Wildey, with caption "Artist's versin of Carrington Peak" (p. 028). Pages 89-94 show the preparations and work undertaken by a large rescue party involved in searching for two school teachers, B Robbins and H D Smith, who died while attempting to cross the Harman Pass, en route from Hokitika to the Bealey. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes views of Lake Coleridge, the Rakaia River, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki showing the outflow river, views from the Hermitage (including Mts Sefton and Cook), terminal moraine in the Tasman Valley, and Ball Hut and the botanising ground with gentians and mountain daisies. Slides on this sheet are numbered 176-206 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. (No. 175 of Lake Coleridge, is not noted on this sheet, but is one of those removed for the lecture series). Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. [175], 178-179, 181-184, 189, 191-194, 197, 204) showing views of Lake Coleridge and country around, Rakaia River, the road to Mount Cook (Aoraki/Mount Cook), Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook, Mount Sefton, Hermitage Hotel, and the Tasman Valley from Ball Hut looking up the glaciers. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Description: Alpine views in the South Island, taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, circa 1907-1911. For information on mountaineering trips taken by Dr Teichelmann, see internet at http://ebenezerteichelmann.blogspot.com/2007/12/teichelmann.html. In 1911 he took an exploratory trip with Alec Graham and Jack Clarke to the head of the Wanganui River (Westland). Image no. 17 shows their camp in the Wanganui River Valley, and image no. 19 shows Alex Graham trying unsuccesfully to ford the Lambert River. The article also mentions that he took many pictures on this trip. Photographs include views of Franz Josef Glacier, Mount Tasman, Mount Cook and David's Dome, taken from Mount Roon; views of the trip taken with Alec Graham and Jack Clarke showing the Lambert River (tributary of the Wanganui), the Lambert Glacier and Mount Lambert; also the area of the Lord River, Mount Lord, the Lord Glacier and Lord Range with Mount Stoddart, Malcolm Peak, Newton Peak and Mount Tyndall. Description: Alpine views in the South Island and two views of rock formations in the North Island taken by G E Mannering. There are also four images of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which were probably all taken by Wehrli AG, a photographic company between 1900 and 1924 (nos. 27, 32, 50 and 57). Images numbered 36, 41 and 47 show views from the Godley Riverbed, with the various mountains identified in pencil on the back. No. 7 shows clouds above Waiho with the note "The condensing power of mountains, Waiho". Several images look down to Bealey township from the top of the pipeline. Photograph 24 is probably of the helichrysum species. Several views show close-ups of glaciers, including ice pinnacles on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 20); one of "hummocky ice" on the Godley Glacier (no. 37); Mannering's two young sons on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 38); broken ice on Franz Josef Glacier (no. 39); a sand cone on the Tasman Glacier, with four women and three men in the backgound (no. 43); and the terminal glacier face (Franz Josef?). Image no. 25 has identification which reads "Organs - Sandstone cliffs on Mahaka (Mohaka?) River, Hawke's Bay. Image no. 34 shows Samuel Butler's cottage at Mesopotamia Station; and no. 56 probably shows the Cass Field Station. Many of the images by Marcel Kurz show mountaineers, bivouacs and camping sites in the mountains, including the Pioneer Ridge Bivvy. Image no. 133, taken by Marcel Kurz shows Ned Porter, Clive Barker and Doris Barker (later Mrs Porter), on the second ascent of Mount Haidinger in 1927. Most identified places are listed above. The first page shows 9 ink drawings showing the ascent of the Hochstetter Dome in March 1883, surrounding a photograph of Anna and Robert von Lendenfeld. The ascent was made by Robert Lendenfeld, his wife Anna, and New Zealander Harry Dew.
