Description: Three images taken by Leslie Hinge, taken probably ca 1900s and at some time between 1925 and Hinge's death in 1942. The prints were originally loose in two photo albums (see ref PA1-o-1911 and PA1-o-1912). The images show: - One of the `Twin' geysers at Wairakei Valley near Taupo. - Woman seated on the monument to commemorate the heroism of Arthur Ambury, with Mt Taranaki in the background. - Aerial view of the passenger ship Tamahine leaving Tory Channel for Cook Strait. Other - An image very similar to that found here of Mt Taranaki was published in `New Zealand Railways magazine' (1 June 1939, p 55), credited as a Railways publicity photograph. Description: Collection comprises holograph correspondence from Amy Caroline Watling to her family in England. The letters begin as Mrs Watling, her husband and her two youngest children travelled out from England to New Zealand aboard the steam ship 'Remuera' (1912). The letters continue for a period after their arrival in New Zealand, detailing their initial travels within the country and their family life (1912-1913). The original letters continue until June 1913. There is also a partial typescript of these letters with a running commentary. The transcripts include other letters not in the manuscript collection and continue up until May 1915. There is also a biographical history of the Watling family, a family tree and two scanned photographs. Title supplied by Library Arrangement: The donor, Prudence Stokes, arranged the collection and provided further transcripts and an account of the Watling family before donating it to the Alexander Turnbull Library in 2017. May Caroline Watling and her family travelled from England to New Zealand on the SS Remuera in 1912 and lived with relatives at Te Ahu Ahu, Ōhaeawai and Auckland before returning to England in 1920. Prue Stokes collected and arranged the letters of her grandmother, provided a partial transcript and added a commentary, as well as a biographical history of the Watling family, a family tree and two scanned photographs. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') voyage to New Zealand in 1958. He travelled on board the SS Strathmore, via the Suez Canal as far as Australia, after which he sailed to New Zealand leaving from Sydney on the Wanganella. This sheet of slides covers the trip from Colombo with views of Colombo streets, a stall selling cottons and silks, a Buddhist shrine, and priests at a Buddhist Temple. There are two views of the Cocos Keeling Islands before his arrival in Australia. Only one purchased slide of koala bears relates to Australia on this sheet, the rest having been transferred to another file by Mr Williams, for later use in lectures on Australia. Slides on this sheet are numbered 27-68 with gaps for those removed for lectures on Australia, and on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 27-45) showing arrival in and departure from Australia as part of a representative collection on Australia for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. Slides nos. 47, 59-50, 52, 54-56, 60, 64-67, and 69-70 were transferred for his lectures on New Zealand. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Description: Photographs of Wellington City and its environs, taken between 1974 and 1991 by Norm Zemanek. Subjects largely comprise notable buildings and landmarks, such as fountains. Transport also features with images of the old cable car, a Westpac rescue helicopter, and a number of ships included. Buildings shown are: the Bank of New Zealand under construction, the Beehive, the Federated Farmers building, the General Assembly Library, the House of Ladies (corner Boulcott and Willis Streets), the Kiwi Rock Cafe with the rear of a car protruding from its facade, the Majestic Towers, the Maritime Museum, the Michael Fowler Centre, the National Library of New Zealand, Old St Paul's, the Point Halswell Beacon (Lighthouse), the Public Trust Office, supports under the Shamrock Hotel during its shift, St Mary's (St Mary of the Angels), the State Insurance Office. Also included are views of wharf cranes showing parts of the city and Oriental Bay in the background; the amkons (large concrete blocks) at the south end of Wellington Airport, and the casting bed for the Ngauranga Gorge motorway flyover bridge. Other images show Frank Kitts Park and the 'Albatross' Fountain (also at night), the Oriental Bay (Carter) fountain, the NZI fountain, the plaster statue of Kupe being moved from Wellington Railway Station, the driving wheel at Evans Bay near the Patent Slip site (now known as Cog Park), Super Loops at the Wellington Exhibition, and the Bucket Tree near Tawa. Ships included: Esmeralda, Chilean tall ship; the NZ frigates Canterbury, Wellington, Taranaki and Otago in Wellington Harbour; Crystal Harmony cruise ship; Queen Elizabth II; a Polish tall training ship. Description: Depicts a group of wharfies surveying the ship Aorangi as it comes into port. There is a newspaper clipping in the top right corner, referring to the repainting of the ship white and gold and its return to work as a passenger ship after being requisitioned by the British Ministry of War Transport in 1941. The ship appears to be gleaming. The title suggests that the colour of the ship will prevent the wharfies from declaring the ship 'black' or non-union.
