Description: Contains a logbook kept by R F Gambier a midshipsman aboard the `HMS Dauntless', commanded by Captain George C Gambier. The log book records the voyage to the Pacific or `South Seas' in 1821-1822, with details of weather conditions encountered. There are also details of landings throughout the Pacific including Huahini, Tahiti. Also included is a night order book kept by RF Gambier while he was commander aboard the `HMS Satellite' and the `HMS Sappho' for voyages aimed at suppressing the slave trade around Africa during the 1840s. Description: The upper view shows two black men walking with a long stick between them on their shoulders. Large fish are suspended from the stick. They are followed by a black woman, a baby on her back and a large basket of fruit on her head. The lower view shows a single man with a similar long stick, holding suspended dead birds. Description: A forest scene, showing a man with a gun on the left, aiming at two other men who have been boiling a cauldron over a fire. One carries a spear, the other is falling with a wound in his back, the wound marked with red paint. The scene is likely to be in Mauritius and to involve shooting escaped slaves, since the word maroon has the meaning of an escaped slave. Description: Portraits of two Maori women and a girl, probably from the Bay of Islands. All three are dressed in woven flax garments and appear to be wearing European-style necklaces. 'Amoko' on the left and 'Eana' in the centre both have ear adornments. Eana has moko on her chin. Earle described the two women left and centre as being about 25 years old, and 'Hepee [on the right] about 13 years old, is one of Amoko's slaves'. Description: Political cartoons from the end of the ministry of Peter Fraser, the lead up to the 1949 election (in which he was defeated by Sidney Holland), and the first year of Holland's ministry. These cartoons mainly address Holland's link to the British conservatives (which McNamara had a very negative view of), and cuts he made to wages, pensions and allowances when he came into power. Description: Four drawings on one page. At the top, a frontal view of a young woman, no. 49, named as a slave of the chief of Maraenui. The drawing is incomplete, and includes a small hand, possibly that of a baby, on the woman's chin. 'Puteki' is a profile portrait of a young man in a tag cloak. Description: Shows 14 views of Maori domestic life, including tools, clothing and household receptacles. Accompanying page of text (C-170-002-1) lists the numbered items as follows: 1. Mode of fishing with nets on Lake Taupo: the fish, which are still small, are caught in a seine with very fine meshes, and a pole about 20 feet long, with tufts of grass fastened at the end, to drive the fish into the net. 2. A fishing weir, or eel pah, on the river Mokau. 3. Wooden fish-hook. 4. Fish-hook generally in use, made of wood, with a layer of pawa [i.e. paua], or pearl shell (Haliotis), and the hook formed of human bone. A feather of the kivi kivi (Apteryx Australis) is fastened at the extremity. The lines are of flax and, as these hooks dangle astern of the canoes, the glittering appearance of the pawa attracts the fish. 5. Kupenga, or eel trap, formed of twigs, from Mokau. 6. Ko, a wooden spade, for rooting up ferns, and preparing the ground for plantations. 7. A pestle for beating flax, formed of volcanic trap. 8. Wooden flute, one of the orifices of which is tattooed to resemble the lips of a woman. 9. Bark bucket, and calabashes for holding water: the orifices of these latter are also tattooed in a similar manner. 10. Ornamented flax basket for household purposes. 11. E kumeti, ancient wooden bowl for kumeras, from the deserted pah of Otawhao, near Waipa, eight feet in circumference. 12. and 13. Flax sandals from Otago, in the Southern Island. 14.
