Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Gavin McLachlan; story of the Wairarapa McLachlans; rates assessment notice; article on Couruanen (1966); map. Original owners were brothers Donald and John McLachlan who purchased land at the southern end of the 40 Mile Bush. In 1859 John settled on the northern portion of Tirohanga which he named `Coruanan', after their home in Scotland. In 2006 it was owned by his great-grandson Gavin McLachlan and his mother Ormi. Description: The logbook describes the passengers' health and details of treatment and includes observations on the weather and the voyage. The medical comforts, list of stores and a chart detailing daily rates of sailing which are at the back of the original log have not been transcribed. Dr Thomas Hughes was the Surgeon Superintendent on board the New Zealand Company vessel `Clifford' during her voyage to Wellington and Nelson. The ship left Gravesend on 18 December 1841 and arrived at Nelson, its final destination, on 11 May 1842. Description: Richmond's letters to his wife Emily in Auckland are dated 28 August 1857 and 6 September 1857. The former describes a voyage from Auckland to Wellington on the `Wonga Wonga, the later describes his visit to Wellington and the Hutt, and people he visited. Publication - Extracts from the originals are published in G H Scholefield's edition of `Richmond-Atkinson papers' (vol 1 pp 295, 301) Source of title - Supplied title Christopher William Richmond was born in London in 1821 and admitted to the bar in 1847. He married Emily Elizabeth Atkinson in 1852 and later that year they emigrated to New Plymouth along with other members of the Richmond and Atkinson families. In 1855 he was elected to the House of Representatives and joined the ministry of Stafford, holding a variety of positions, the most important being colonial treasurer and minister of native affairs. He knew almost nothing about Maori culture and land tenure and had no sympathy for Maori society. He introduced measurers to individualize Maori land title so that sale to settlers could be more easily facilitated and he played a part in the conflict that started the New Zealand wars in Taranaki. The writer follows the lives of the two families separately and the younger family together through their struggles in New Zealand. Includes family trees and photographs. The background of William Catt is a bit of a mystery and the rumour of money in Chancery and the forfeiture of William's inheritance because he came to New Zealand and did not return to claim it intrigued many of his descendants who gathered at least two expeditions to search for it. William had married twice before he came to New Zealand in 1857 and married for the third time as `a bachelor'. Description: Dr Fitchett describes the history of the Fitchett family of the `Ohiro District', Brooklyn, Wellington, who are descended from William Fitchett (b 1730) of Bretby, Derbyshire, England. John Fitchett, from Leamington, arrived in Wellington on the `London' in May 1842, with his wife Louisa (Buddle), settling in Brooklyn and developing Ohiro Farm. Dr Fitchett describes various members and branches of the family, their lives, descendants etc, documenting events from family, official and local government sources. Includes genealogical tables. Dr Fitchett has spent much of his life in Brooklyn, Wellington. He attended Brooklyn School and Wellington College. He trained as a doctor at Otago Medical School and returned to general practice in the suburb from 1955 to 1990 when he retired. He continues to reside in Brooklyn.
