Description: Photographic images of various sizes taken by Leslie Hinge, probably between 1900 to 1940. The images show a number of outdoor recreational, sports and tourism activities, including: - Images of skiers and mountain hikers on Aoraki/Mount Cook. - Two photographs showing a man at a rivermouth, location unknown, fishing up a doctored image of a shark's head. - Bushland with native ferns, ponds and waterfalls. - Closeup images of geothermal mud pools. - Horse and car tracks cutting their way through native forests. - Panoramic photographs of glaciers, mountain peaks and mountain ranges. - Mount Ngauruhoe from the Tongariro Chateau. - Boating, lake and wayside harbour scenes. - Miniature panorama photographs showing boats in Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; and an aerial view of Wellington Harbour, looking back towards the Hutt Valley. - A photograph of Oriental Bay, Wellington at night. Provenance: Donor is the granddaughter of Leslie Hinge and acquired the collection from her mother, Ruby Blanche Keen (nee Hinge), after her mother's death in 2001. The collection had previously been stored under the family house at Oriental Terrace, Wellington.

Description: Photographs taken by Les Cleveland of people and alpine scenes, largely in the West Coast Region, between 1939 and circa 1980s. Printed between 1960 and 2010. Many prints include captions detailing the location of the photograph and the date it was taken and printed. Multiple prints are stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph". Identified people include Ben Sutherland (operating nozzle on claim at Goldsborough), Mike Armstrong and Jim Daken (eating fish and chips), Mike Sheldon (proprietor of the European Hotel, Charleston), Mick O'Neill (barman at Red Lion Hotel, Hokitika), Tex Smith (Southern Scenic Airways pilot), Kevin Blythell (meat hunter), and Lynne Rogers (seated in a Herbert Street coffee bar, Wellington). Also includes several nudes of Mary Cleveland taken on Mount Ruapehu and in Te Naihi Valley and a photograph of Les Cleveland boiling a billy. Unidentified people include a World War Two soldier, a whitebaiter and his children, two small boys on tricycles in Te Urewera, an injured woman being treated by the ski patrol on Mount Ruapehu, fishermen, and women working in the Carters' Sawmill Store at Hannah's Clearing in Haast. Mackay album

Description: Album created with aviation pioneer Horatio Murdoch MacKay. Photographs include several in which MacKay was the first man to fly across the Tasman as a passenger, making the flight with Charles Kingsford Smith. One sequence shows Boeing biplane (purchased by New Zealand Airways Ltd in 1934), shipped from Vancouver and assembed in New Zealand, and the first landing at Green Island `Aerodrome'. A number of views of different aeroplanes, both monoplanes and biplanes follows. There are a large number of postcards of Launceston, Jenolan Caves, and Ballarat in Australia, and caves in the Waitomo area of New Zealand. Photographs of a group travelling on a South Island tour by White Star Taxis, a company which MacKay established, including views of the first hotel at Wanaka `The White Star Private Hotel'. One scene shows one of the taxis after an accident. Other scenes show a group skiing, a group at the summit of the Crown Range, and a large group on a motor launch. The last sequence is chiefly family photographs, including several houses, and two different wedding parties; several portraits, possibly of Horatio MacKay's wife Helen Emma (nee Griffiths). Interview with Ian Baine

Description: Interview with Ian Baine about his experiences as a long-term member of the Tararua Tramping Club. Comments that his father Jack was an inaugural member of the Club in 1919 and led the first winter crossing of the southern Tararuas in 1922. Mentions his mother was also an early member of the Club and was in the first Southern Crossing with women (and chaperones) in the party. Refers to his father being a ranger for the Water Board and having a hut off the Wainuiomata Road. Talks about trips in the Wainuiomata and Eastbourne area when he was a child. Recalls Club members building huts and maintaining difficult tracks until the Department of Conservation (DOC) took over. Discusses search and rescue operations and tramping club members carrying out the dead from the crash of a [Lockheed] Lodestar [in 1949, in the Tararuas behind Waikanae]. Refers to skiing from Kime Hutt [in the Tararuas] in 1947, and the club moving to Ruapehu where he won many cups. Outlines the development of ski tows and lifts at Ruapehu in the 1950s and the evolution of skiing. Mentions a tramping trip in the Nelson area in 1948/49, and an alpine trip the following year from the Hermitage over saddles to Franz Joseph Glacier. Refers to attending an alpine instruction course in the South Island and equipment used. Comments on going to Europe for his work in 1955 where he climbed, skied and met his future wife. Reflects on injuries he has suffered skiing and tramping and friends who have been killed in accidents.
