By: Wahine 50 Charitable Trust

Description: Collection comprises documentation relating to survivor stories and/or recollections of passengers, crew, rescuers, witnesses, and locals concerning the "Wahine" ferry sinking and storm on 10 April 1968, as told by those persons and/or their family members. The stories comprise predominantly a paper copy of a statement by the persons and/or their families, which was sent by email (as an attachment or within the body of the email), copied by the Wahine 50 Trust into a Microsoft Word document, and then printed out by the Trust. The original date of the email correspondence has been annotated in pencil on the statement by the Trust. Some stories have accompanying material; such as photographs, newspaper cuttings, photocopies, DVDs, or electronic files (text and audio). A few of the stories are in the form of booklets created by the story contributor. The titles of the descriptive records for individual stories are as transcribed from the item, or as supplied by the Library to indicate the person(s) featured in the story. Arrangement: The materials relating to each story were arranged by the Trust staff as a separate file within a larger folder on delivery to the Library. That arrangement has been preserved by the archivist. Consent forms for 17 of the stories arrrived with the 2023 donation, and have been kept together in a separate folder. The Wahine 50 Trust was established in 2016 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the ferry "Wahine" in Wellington Harbour on 10 April 2018. Activities included public events, (memorial services, exhibition, and displays), a documentary, and the creation of a website (www.wahine50.org.nz) and database which would hold the stories of every survivor, rescuer, and person who played a support role on the day of the disaster.
