Otway's connection with New Zealand seems to be his First Lieutenantship aboard the HMS "Castor" which stormed Kawiti's Pa in 1846. Dated 1822-1823 because of the 1822 date on front cover and the inscription "Castle Otway May 7th 1823" on top of the contents list on a separate sheet. Inscriptions: Album page - centre - (On front of front cover) : R J Otway / August 6th 1822 Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Physical Description: Sketchbook of 20 leaves in board cover, 210 x 290 mm. Provenance: Previously part of the papers of K A Webster. Processing information: The papers were in the Manuscripts and Archives Section's workroom, probably since the move from the Free Lance Building to the National Library building in 1987 and had previously not been identified as Webster material. While some attempt has been made to discover links between the material, such as the papers relating to R J Otway and another group relating to Frederick Banks, much of it appears to stand on its own.
