Benjes, Peter, 1933-: Cartoons relating to the New Zealand Dairy Board

Date: 1980s

By: Benjes, Peter, 1933-; Lodge, Nevile Sidney, 1918-1989; Evening Post (Wellington, N.Z.); Webster's Photographic Studio

Reference: ATL-Group-00909

Description: Collection made up of two cartoon art prints gifted to Peter Benjes. Both cartoons were drawn by Nevile Sidney Lodge in 1980 and published in the Evening Post. Cartoons reference changes to the dairy market and the New Zealand Dairy Board during the 1980s. Peter Benjes, was the Chief Financial Officer of the New Zealand Dairy Board, from 1988 to 1993. The cartoons depict a time in the mid-80s when Prime Minister Robert Muldoon decided the Dairy Board should no longer be funded by the Reserve Bank, but should look for other means of financing. Along with an overdraft from the BNZ, Peter and the CEO Bernie Knowles arranged for a bond issue in the NZ market. Peter’s initial interest rate offered to the public was deemed too high by Muldoon and it was reduced by 0.5%. It was still successful, however, and Peter managed to secure an extra $20 million to what he was seeking. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Cartoons arrived at Library in frames and mounted on cardboard with handwritten inscriptions on the reverse. Peter Benjes was employed by the New Zealand Dairy Board; General Manager Treasury from 1977 and Chief Financial Officer from 1988 until retirement in 1993. In 1987, the New Zealand Dairy Board’s low interest trading account with the Reserve Bank ended. In response Benjes arranged finance through the Bank of New Zealand, and with Bernie Knowles, issued bonds in the financial market. Felicity Benjes, who deposited the cartoons, is the daughter of Peter Benjes. Quantity: 2 b&w art print(s). Provenance: The cartoons were originally published in the Evening Post and reproductions were later made and presented to Peter as a gift. Processing information: Frames and backing boards were removed for storage and preservation reasons and not retained.
