Description: A range of photographs taken in New Zealand, particularly scenes in the Ruapehu district. Most taken taken about 1940s-1950s. One taken circa 1967. Most photographs probably taken by by Neville Mosen. Some may have been collected by him. Also two images entered into photographic competitions by Mosen. Also a set of 10 handcoloured images, chiefly images taken in the Ruapehu district. Description: Plates show: 1. Maggie & Bella, Rotorua guides (with Lake Taupo, Lake Rotorua, Lake Manapouri, Lake Wanaka, and four other Maori portraits around the rim; including Tuari Netana, Tuterei Karewa) 2. A Maori maiden, N.Z. (with the same rim decoration) 3. Maori mother and child (with the same rim decoration) 4. Sophia, Rotorua guide (with the same rim decoration) 5. Shows a head-and-shoulders portrait of the Ngāti Maru chief Matene Te Nga. These 'bowl plates' were probably made in England. They were manufactured for a short period, between 1900 and 1905. Iles may have had them made overseas with a licence to print them with his own designs. The same images were also produced on plates with a different border of native flowers and birds. An additional plate with 'Maori chief' (Matenga) after a photograph by Iles has also been recorded. It includes the statement Published for Iles Rotorua by George Hadfield Wellington. (Information from Jim Jordan, an American collector of early tin plates, October-November 2013) Dating: Iles moved to Rotorua in 1901. The plates seem to have been manufactured until about 1905 Arrangement: Collection created by Library to bring together two separate donations.
