Description: Interview with Dr John Steele, born in Wellington in 1929. Recalls his earliest musical experience, having piano lessons, and learning to play the organ at Wellington College. Refers to studying music as part of a B.A. at Victoria University College, mentioning Douglas Lilburn and Frederick Page, lunchhour concerts, and developing his own repertoire of contemporary music. Comments on obtaining an M.A. in music at Otago University College, then going to Jesus College, Cambridge on a government bursary for a PhD on keyboard music. Refers to Francis Cameron, Thurston Dart, and the organist at Exeter Cathedral John Lugg. Mentions that he also did watercolour painting in Cambridge, and was first introduced to wine there.
