Addressed mostly to his family, but some more specifically to either his mother or father. Includes small number of incoming letters from relatives of military personnel who served under his command. Collection includes one telegram, received at Eketahuna, and one newspaper. Source of title - Supplied by Library Frank Felix Reid (Army Registration No. WWI 37220), served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as Second Lieutenant with the Royal Field Artillery from 3 June to 20 September 1915 in England, and from 21 September 1915 to 10 March 1916 in France. He served with the New Zealand Field Artillery from 16 March to 31 May 1916 in England and 31 May 1916 to September 1918 in France. Description: Mounted photographic portraits of members of the Sling Kiwi's concert party in costume for a variety of performances, 1917-1919. Collected by Gladys Wilkin, nee Ball. Gladys Ball appears in all nine photographs and is identified on the rear of each mount. Five images are studio portraits, three are on a stage with flag backdrop [New Zealand flag with anchor instead of Southern Cross constellation], and one is taken outside a building. Identified photographers are H. C. Messer and Royal Studios, both of Salisbury, England. Photographs depict performers in four different sets of costumes. In two photographs Ball poses as the love interest of a man [tramp?]; in one she sits on his knee, in the other she peers over a decorative folding screen. Group portraits of the concert party show performers dressed in a costume featuring berets and cravats; another costume features hoop earrings and tasselled hats; and in four images the performers wear costumes with ruff collars and checked pants [Pierrot? clown?]. A World War I military orchestra join the performers, in uniform and holding their instruments, in two photographs. In one image the performers hold up a banner reading "Slings' Kiwis". Minnie Gladys Esther Wilkin (née Ball) was a member of the Sling Camp Concert Party, 1917-1919. She was known as Gladys. Quantity: 9 b&w original photographic print(s) on mounts. Description: Comprises a small publication 'Irish Ballads and Songs' selected by Martin MacDermott, [1890?], and loose papers that were laid in to this incomplete volume, including correspondence, clippings, research papers, and postcards. The material in this folder was enclosed in a bag labelled by James Cowan's family as 'James Cowan Favourite Poetry'. The loose papers include holograph notes and clippings about Irish legends and poetry. Includes a draft article '"Meinself und Gott": When the Kaiser was in Flower' by James Cowan, dated 1941, which includes comical verses and ditties relating to the late Kaiser Wilhelm II. The correspondence includes a letter to James Cowan from his brother Henry Cowan, dated 16 September 1917, on "Y. M. C. A. with the Australian Imperial Force" letterhead, written from Pennings Camp, Tidworth, Salisbury Plains. This includes a small photographic print, possibly of Henry, in military uniform that was laid in the letter. Other correspondence includes a letter from Christian Keig, dated 18 November 1917, from the Isle of Man, which refers to Henry Cowan's visit to see them; three other letters from family members from Ellerslie (Annie and Willie), dated between 1927 and 1930; and a letter from Johannes Andersen in his role as the Librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library, dated 26 August 1931. Cowan had marked this letter in pencil and used the back of it to write some song lyrics for "A Toast to Dear Old Erin" and "Tim [?] the Fluter's Ball". Also includes papers relating to the death of Agnes Margaret Cowan in 1930, and a mourning card from Mrs W. A. Cowan and family of Stanley Point, dated 14 November 1913. Also six postcards, three of which are original photographic prints relating to the Cowan family. One of the postcards is from James Cowan's brother Henry, dated 22 December 1909, writing from Stanley Point, and features a wooden villa, which Henry describes as his house. The other postcards feature images of a bearded man sitting in a chair, with a baby on his lap; a view of Stanley Point; the Katesbridge Presbyterian Church; "Our Late Premier, Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon, P. C."; and "Killarney. Turnpike Rocks Gap of Dunloe". Two photographic prints. One of a family group portrait with an unidentified elderly woman with two other women and two girls; and one of the elderly woman seated alone, with trees in the background circa 1920s. Which may refer to the Divan Drawer location where they were stored, and the numbering of the catalogue list that Margaret Cowan created for the collection.

Description: Four group portraits of survivors of the Divisional Ammunition Column (DAC), World War One, including John Miller. Photographs were taken some time between December 1918 and March 1919, by an unidentified photographer. Two photographs include signatures of some of the men, and in some cases where they are from, on the reverse. The location is unidentified but is possibly Deutz, Germany or Larkhill, England.
