Merrett, Joseph Jenner, 1815-1854 :Balancoire des guerriers neo-zelandais / dessin de E...

Date: 1840 - 1847 - 1855 - 1845

By: Merrett, Joseph Jenner, 1815-1854; Bayard, Emile Antoine, 1837-1891; Charton, M E, active 1860-1890s; Tour du Monde (Periodical); Trichon et Guillaume; Clive Burden Ltd.

Reference: A-109-062

Description: Shows seven Maori male figures on a swing. In the foreground is a group of six Maori, including a mother and child and two standing children, all with backs to the viewer, watching the swing. Beyond, two male figures facing viewer also watch the swing, beside the pa fence, which incorporates a carved figure with arms crossed on chest. Within the pa fence is a group of large trees and one palm (nikau?). In the distance, men work with five canoes, one in the water. A dwelling and fence are on the distant shore, and beyond is rolling countryside to the horizon. ATL has another copy of this engraving (no text on back and no printed title, so perhaps a proof copy) at A-256-050. Various versions of this image are discussed in "Mrs Hobson's album" (Auckland University Press, 1989). At q993.1 MRS 1989. ATL has Sir George Grey's "Polynesian mythology..." (London, 1855) at: P 572.9931 GRE 1855. Bayard appears to have added considerable detail to the image he saw possibly in Sir George Grey's "Polynesian mythology..." (London, 1855) or perhaps a French translation of same. Grey's engraver, Josiah Wood Whymper, probably took the image from Merrett's drawing "A moari or native swing" (Grey album p. 104, plate 273 (British Library ADD.MS). George Angas' "Native swing" (from 'The New Zealanders illustrated') appears also to have been taken from this British library Merrett image, but laterally reversed. Bayard may also have worked from a reversed image. Other Titles - Native swing of the New Zealand warriors. A native game. The swing. Extended Title - From: 'Le tour du monde; nouveau journal des voyages'. 61 volumes. "Voyage a la Nouvelle-Zelande", volume unknown, 1890?, verso of page 282. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Emile Bayard; Recto - bottom centre - TRICHON ET GUILLAUME; Recto - beneath image - Balancoire des guerriers neo-zelandais. - Dessin de Emile Bayard d'apres sir Georges Grey. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Engraving, black and white 238 x 158 mm, on sheet 300 x 217 mm.
