Description: In December 1962 the Pascoe family went for a climbing holiday in the Arthurs Pass area. There are photographs of Dorothy and the girls with mountaineering friend, Michael Clark among the mountains. The album is also a record of the transalpine crossing from the Waitaha in Westland to the Rakaia made by John Pascoe, Michael Clark and Stan Conway in January 1963. Description: Album of photographs relating to mountains and mountaineering in the Southern Alps. A photograph of George John Roberts, Charles Edward Douglas, and Leonard Cockayne (p 1), was probably taken by George Roberts' wife, who took one of the group at the same time but in different positions (See image at PAColl-5926-13) C H Stonor is seen with "Dr Teichmann" [i.e. Ebenezer Teichelmann] (p 40). Two photographs at the end of the album are of Tasmania, one showing a bush scene with a small waterfall; and one taken by John Watt Beattie of Hobart from the bay. Description: A record of climbing expeditions in the Southern Alps made by Alister Duthie and other mountaineers from 1931 to 1934. The first is a single group photograph of a party of eight, one of whom was A P Harper, leaving 25 Mile Hut in the Rees Valley in 1931/1932. Another copy of this print is in the collection at Photo Archive ref PAColl-8102-5-63 and it carries a caption naming each person in the party. The print in this album is surrounded by their signatures. The caption on the copy print also states that this photograph was taken on the occasion of the first New Zealand climbing camp. The second expedition recorded took place from the 4th of January to the 10th of February 1934. Initially the party comprised Alister Duthie, Lella Davidson, and Greta Stevenson. It involved climbing mountains in the general vicinity of Mount Cook. They began by crossing the Copland Pass to Welcome Flat. At Waiho the party was joined by Kurt Suter who was working as a guide at Franz Josef Glacier. The party did much climbing which included Mount De la Beche, the Minerets of Mount Drummond, Mount Spencer, Glacier Peak, Mount Lendenfeldt, ending up at De la Beche Hut on January the 24th, at which point Lella Davidson left to return to Dunedin. The remaining three continued their climbing expedition during which they made the first crossing of the Southern Alps divide by way of Clarke Saddle, a high col at nearly 10,000 feet between Teichelmann Peak and Mount Bountier. The third expedition recorded took place earlier from the 25th of December 1933 to the 2nd of January 1934 when Alister Duthie and W H W Walker made an usuccessful attempt on Mount Aspiring. They were foiled by the weather and their tent was "blown to bits." However, from the 12th to the 19th of April 1934 a party consisting of Kurt Suter, R Pinney, and Alister Duthie climbed Mount Aspiring via the north-west ridge, and also climbed Plunket Dome and Cascade Saddle. As well as photographs relating to these expeditions, the album contains many other images of mountain peaks and river vallies in the Southern Alps. An article by Alister Duthie on the first crossing of the Southern Alps divide via Clarke Saddle is housed at Photo Archive ref PAColl-8102-7. It is from The New Zealand Alpine Journal, Vol 5, June 1934. The crossing of the Southern Alps divide via Clarke Saddle was reported in the "Star." Description: Alpine, bush, valley and mountaineering images taken by various photographers in the South Island. While there is a typescript inventory, many of the sites are unidentified, including images numbered 1-7, 27-141. There are two major sequences, one taken by Edgar Richard Williams (signed ER) when on a trip up the Rakaia River with T.T. Gough in 1917 (information from internet) (image nos. 10-11, 14, 18-26). Some of these have notes on the back added by John Pascoe at a later date. The other main sequence shows an expedition to Mount La Perouse in 1932. This sequence was possibly taken by William D Frazer (from information on internet), although it is possible they were taken by Jack Mitchell (John Wesley Mitchell, Snr). The La Perouse expedition included mountaineers Tom Sheenan, Alex Graham, Marion Scott, Jack Mitchell, Louie Roberts (Mary Louise Roberts), and Anne Stevenson. Images numbered 6-7, show a large group of men, possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, or the New Zealand Alpine Club (either the Canterbury or the Otago branch). John Dobree Pascoe is visible standing in the middle row towards the right. Most or the men are seen in front of a mountain hut, while three men are perched on the roof. The last two images are sterescopes from an "Earthquake series" published by W.S. Smith, showing earthquake damage in San Francisco in 1906. There are also four images of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which were probably all taken by Wehrli AG, a photographic company between 1900 and 1924 (nos. 27, 32, 50 and 57). Images numbered 36, 41 and 47 show views from the Godley Riverbed, with the various mountains identified in pencil on the back. No. 7 shows clouds above Waiho with the note "The condensing power of mountains, Waiho". Several images look down to Bealey township from the top of the pipeline. Description: Scenic views of New Zealand chiefly taken by Government Publicity photographers. North Island views include the Waitomo Caves system, including the "Waitomo Caves Hostel" (circa 1908); "King Edward's Court" and "Bride's Jewels" in the Ruakuri Cave; and an image of glow-worms. The other main area in the North Island is along the Whanganui River, including small ferry boats, the Makere Houseboat, and a Maori in a dugout canoe. Description: Alpine views, chiefly taken by Harold (Ned) Porter, circa 1923 to 1927. The first two photographs were taken by Swiss guide Marcel Kurz who accompanied Porter. Interspersed with Porter's photographs are a few taken by Dr F W Vollmann, a German archaeologist who spent some time in 1909 climbing in the Southern Alps. The last photograph (no. 157) was taken by H O Frind. Inserted between photographs nos 075 and 076 is a slip with hand-drawn map of the Bonar Glacier Plain showing climbing routes, the Matukituki River and Saddle, Mounts Bevan and Joffre, and positions of campsites used (by Porter?). A number of images show unidentified mountaineers. Most of the photographs are collected in sequences wrapped in paper folders. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Southern Alps towards the West Coast, chiefly taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, with the last two images probably taken by Marcel Kurz. The box is entitled "W.A. Kennedy. Dr. T. 4 (Box 22). The images are separated into nine sequences filed in paper folders, with two loose images at the end. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod.
