Description: Two men stare at an octopus in a glass tank. I has settled itself on a box labelled 'Same old cr*p' while beside it is a second box labelled 'Vibrant world-class super city'. One of the men comments 'He's clever, but he's hardly psychic' suggesting that the octopus's choice of box doesn't require psychic forces as the future of Auckland City is plainly obvious. Refers to the controversial decision to merge several city councils in the Auckland area into one 'supercity'. The 'psychic' octopus refers to 'Paul' the German octopus which correctly predicted German performance in the Fifa Football World Cup in South Africa. The political cartoons refer to an electricity crisis as well as issues concerned with the Wellington City Council. In one of the Wellington cartoons the name MacAlister is mentioned. The sporting portraits feature speedway champion Percy Coleman and boxer Dave Sands, as well as wrestlers Lofty Blomfield, Earl McCready, and Bill Kuusisto. One of them holds papers which detail the Council's inability to alter the planned downtown building. Facing them are two irritated architects who clearly dislike the proposed plan. A model of the plan stands on a large table. One of the architects suggests that if it was already built, occupied and considered historic, they could just demolish it. In the lower right corner a little man comments 'Before you could say Osmond House'. The reference is to the ease with which historic buildings are pulled down. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s).
