De Maus, James, 1836-1871

Dunedin photographer. Brother of David Alexander De Maus. Born circa 1836 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Worked as a photographer in Edinburgh before coming to New Zealand and taking over the Royal Caledonian Portrait Rooms, Princes Street, Dunedin, from the Tait brothers in 1866. The studio was destroyed in a large fire in Princes Street in April 1867. He re-opened at 7 & 8 Fleet Street in 1868, advertising as the Otago School of Photography, and wholesale and retail manufacturers and importers of photographic goods. He moved to Fiji and died there 14 July 1871.
