Description: Photographs of military activities and war work in New Zealand during World 2, 1939-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official use. This album contains photographs on pages 1-54 (Pages 55-149 are empty). Activities include training in building of fascines and revetments for protecting trench walls; barbed wire "concertina"; excavation of command posts (part of a defensive trench system); the use of a 2" mortar; anti-tank rifle instruction; instruction in identifying enemy weapons including grenades and land mines and use of an electric mine detector. The cookery wing in action in the open air; artillery school of instruction; signallers establishing communication & erecting a telegraph pole; use of a 25-pounder; bayonet practice; medical training including rescue of wounded, use of an improvised stretcher, improvised raft for a river crossing carrying the stretcher, transfer to an ambulance, and finally a view of an actual open-air operation. The arrival of Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, shown with New Zealand dignitaries (p 18). Men and women who have returned on furlough parading through Wellington on their way to a luncheon given in their honour by the RSA (p 19-21, 38-40); the arrival of repatriated Prisoners of War being greeted by friends and family in Wellington (p 33-36) A huge crowd celebrating the victory over the Italians at Liberty Corner, on the intersection of Hunter Street, Featherston Street and Lambton Quay (Friday 3rd September 1943) Ceremonies at an undentified marae including Maori dance, haka, poi dances and speeches by military officers. Pages 28-30 show the visit of a British Military Mission to the Forest & Jungle Warfare Wing of the Army School of Instruction, with demonstrations of jungle training. Women are shown with views of the Women's Land Service (Land Army), and also as Post & Telegraph drivers collecting huge bags of mail from a ship. Infantry students at the Army School, Trentham are shown in a river crossing exercise near Foxton, building rafts big enough to carry people, vehicles and weaponry. Launching a fuel barge built at the Wellington Patent Company's shipyards at Evans Bay, where the ceremony was performed by Managing Director Mr Jamieson. Pages 49-53 show photographs of Polish refugee children arriving and settling into the refugee camp at Pahiatua. Pages 53 and 54 show the official opening of a new Model Kindergarten in Hospital Road, Newtown (Saturday 18th November, 1943), opened by the Prime Minister Peter Fraser. Also present were the Labour MP for Wellington South, Robert Mckeen and his wife Jessie Mckeen, Mrs J A Doctor (President of the Free Kindergarten Association), and Dr Clarence Beeby (Director of Education). "Dumped" bales have been tightly pressed to save shipping space (National Publicity Studios) 34. Making butter. The cream from the receiving vat at the bottom is pumped through a heater. It is then cooled quickly on the cooler behind the man. This heating and cooling is called "pasteurising" (National Publicity Studios) 35. Buying wool. At this auction sale in the Town Hall at Wellington, buyers from many countries are bidding for New Zealand wool (National Publicity Studios) 36. Raglan. Description: Samuel Earnest Bennett born Mosgiel 1915. Gives details of family history - father, Percy Francis Bennett, was a draper in Alexandra. Family owned a poultry farm and recalls stamping eggs at night for Otago Egg Circle. Other childhood recollections include: schooldays at Green Island school and later Concord school with reference to Fife and Drum Band; playing outdoors; catching and cooking lobsters from creek on own farm; father's involvement with Abbotsford Methodist Harrier Club, referring to Dale Fincham, an original member; three trips to church on Sundays and parent's involvement in Bible class; Mother making own butter, later getting a [milk] separator and family getting telephone. Describes the Milburn Lime and Cement building during the 1920s and Otago Rolling Mills. Refers to Jack Orr, the Smellie family, Frosty Crimp, Crimp & Sons, Jock, Marcus & Earl. Recalls going to the old picture theatre on Saturday afternoons, referring to Logan Johnson, who played for the (silent) movies. Recalls people standing outside Campbell's store to listen to boxing match between Tommy Campbell and Johnie Leckie on the radio. Mentions Cecil and Jim McMullan (bakers), Bezett (butchers), McLean (bakery), Bolger (bakery), Geordie Findlay, Clarkson (chemists), Donovan (drapery) and Bert Ryan (taxi driver). Talks about Depression, lack of jobs and work on the dole which depended on marital status and number of children. Refers to 1935 election and recalls how some viewed the Labour Party at the time. Description: Carol Ivanhoe Stanford was born in Stratford in 1893, later moving to Hawera. Talks about her father milking 20 cows by hand, and learning to cook by the age of seven. Describes wash day, boiling laundry in a copper, using washboards and homemade soap. Talks about ironing day, using heated sets of irons, and the weekly bath night in a tin bath. Talks about kerosene lamps for lighting, a food safe hanging in a tree for refrigeration and making butter. Recalls entertainment: her father's music, dances, sing alongs, and games such as marbles, rounders and skipping. Recalls riding a horse to school. Talks about a fireworks accident, and finishing school at age 13. Describes transport, her father's horse and gig, and her mother riding side saddle. Mentions their first battery powered radio in 1938. Describes the effect of World War I on her brother, and her husband who served at Gallipoli, and the effect on his health. Talks about getting married in 1920 and her honeymoon. Recalls being married 20 years before buying a car, and talks about having a party line telephone. Talks about living in Hamilton. Description: Shows Tarureka homestead, (the home of James Donald) a two-storeyed house with verandah along the front of the lower level, in centre of picture, with two outbuildings to the left. To the immediate left is a large barn, built in 1870. Further left, is a building with a tall smoking chimney. It may be the butter factory opened in 1881. On the road in the foreground, an elegantly-dressed man and woman on horses gallop by. Two children stand watching in the right foreground. On the driveway to the house is another man on horseback, and two women and a man stand close to the house. Accompanied by typescript label with historical details about the family. The name Tarureka, according to "Memories of South Wairarapa" pp 24-26 (NZ & P q993.1 MEM), means "grass, or sweet herbs". The family of James Donald moved to Featherston in 1870 (from South Featherston) into this new house. The butter factory started operation in 1881. The Donald family still lived in the house in the 1980s? or 1990s. By 2009 the house had become a wedding and conference venue, owned by the Forlong family Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - C.
