New Zealand House (London, England)

New Zealand High Commission building at 80 Haymarket, off Pall Mall in London.

The building was purpose designed from 1954 by the firm Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall and Partners, and was built 1959-1963 by Holland Hannen and Cubitts. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 9th May 1963.

The exterior design is a tower and podium composition with plate glass strip windows and Portland stone bands. The interior incorporates native New Zealand timbers, along with marble from Greece (white Pentellic and grey Marathon marble types). It was the first major office tower in central London, the first to be fully air conditioned and the first to be fully glazed on all sides.

In the lobby stands a 15.5 metre tall pouihi, carved over seven years from a single totara tree by the operatic bass and sculptor Inia te Wiata MBE (1915-71) and added in 1972.

In 1995, the building was listed as Grade II under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its architectural and historic interest.

The New Zealand High Commission had previously been located at 415 The Strand from 1916, and before that at 13 Victoria Street.

Description: Shows a building site in a London street. On the building are the words 'New Zealand House'. A large sign says 'This building is being erected by the New Zealand Govt.' There is also a sign advertising for labour with a sign that reads, 'Hands wanted - 12 carpenters, 9 bricklayers, 6 labourers, 1 High Commissioner, apply job foreman'. Refers to the building of New Zealand House. The High Commission was built by Holland, Hannen & Cubitts in 1959 on the derelict site of the Carlton Hotel, destroyed by a bomb during the Blitz. New Zealand House was to be the main diplomatic representation for the New Zealand government, and no expense was spared in its construction. The design differed from the other diplomatic buildings of the Commonwealth realms in that it would be a modern skyscraper, designed by Sir Robert Matthew. After difficulties in planning permission, the 18 storey building was constructed only after permission was granted by the British Cabinet. It is the only tall building in this part of London, and remains controversial. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Physical Description: Ink drawing on card 340 x 510 mm
