Description: Comprises photocopies of letters written by John Charles Edgar Wyatt who served in World War One, to his parents, other family members, and possibly friends, while serving in World War One with the Auckland Mounted Rifles in Alexandria, Cairo, Gallipoli and Egypt, then in 1917 attending an officer training course at Balliol College, Oxford, after which he returned to New Zealand. Included is an account he wrote of a brush they had with Turks and a Turkish bomb attack on their camp. Description: The diary provides brief details of Chatfield's training in New Zealand and his voyage to Egypt and some further details of fighting at Gallipoli. Chatfield spent time at Quinn's Post and was wounded in the Battle of Chunuk Bair. He spent the remainder of the year convalescing from his injuries, and most diary entries for this period consist of the single word "Convalescing". The diary finishes with Chatfield based in a London hospital. Chatfield was to die of further wounds on 20 July 1918. Most of the diary entries are brief, with only a few extending beyond two or three sentences. The diary includes the names and addresses of "people to write to", one of which has been torn out. The page for 31 December has also been torn out. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Physical Description: Red cloth-covered day a page diary, 12 x 7.5 cm, with gold-edged pages. Provenance: Joseph Chatfield was the great uncle of the donor's mother.

Description: Flyer advertises a showing of a film authorised by Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence, involving 5000 New Zealand soldiers, and based on Barrie Marschel's poem "The Kid from Timaru", about a soldier with the surname Kidd. Barrie Marschel recited his poem "as the films unfold". The flyer states that the film had already had seasons in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The front of the flyer shows a reproduction of a advertisement for the movie with an oval portrait of Barrie Marschel in a straw hat. The border of the flyer shows a design based on laurels. The verso reproduces the poem "The kid from Timaru". A rubber stamp shows the name of the name, place, and theatre where the screening was to take place (Waihi Academy Theatre, 25 April 1918 - ie Anzac Day) "The flame of the Yukon" was a 1917 silent film starring Dorothy Dalton and directed by Charles Miller.
