New Zealand's first lighthouse. The light was lit on 1 January 1859. Wellington Heads lighthouse; Historic Places Trust report on, 1973. A second new tower was constructed on the beach in 1906 as the first light was often shrouded by low fog. Both lights burned together until Baring Head lighthouse was built and lit on 18 June 1935.

Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber, chiefly between 1934 and 1947, but including copies of some of his earlier photographs. Views include trips in the North and South Islands, and views of his home and family, especially in Whiteman's Valley Road and the area around Silverstream. Also various scenes of floods (Hutt River), and storm damage. Photographs associated with roads and railways include steam locomotives, tunnels, bridges and viaducts, some under construction. Among the trip photographs are views of Ngaruawahia, including King Koroki's house (opened in 1938) and the Maori Parliament House. Print was sent to the Historical Society of Eastbourne but did not fit the Society's collecting plan. Depositor provided copies of correspondence with donor, who agreed to the photograph being offered to Alexander Turnbull Library.
