Lighthouse located in Foveaux Strait, 5km from the entrance to Bluff Harbour. Established in 1865, the lighthouse at Dog Island was one of the first to be constructed. Originally built of stone quarried on the island, the tower, which is the highest in New Zealand, took a slight lean due to the soft nature of the ground and had to be encased in concrete. The lighthouse was demanned in July 1989.
