Tuhoromatakaka (Whakarewarewa, N.Z.)

Tuhoromatakaka is at Whakarewarewa. It is a family house opened in 1909, and built for Makereti (Guide Maggie Papakura), who lived there. The house was named for her ancestor Tuhoromatakaka, and built by master carver Tene Waitere. Its carvings were taken to England (via Australia) by Makereti in 1910, for use as part of a Maori village display. Some of the carvings were returned to Rotorua in 1947 and used in Hinemihi whare at Ngāpuna (opened in 1962). Tuhoromatakaka was renovated in 1970.
