Most of the images have good captions, and most of the names noted are listed above. The album includes a number of British Official Photographs. Scenes include New Zealanders in the advance party sailing from Melbourne in December 1939; shipboard scenes of the First Echelon arriving in Egypt; Freyberg welcoming the troops on arrival with Anthony Eden (Secretary of State for the Dominions) and Sir Miles Lampson; the train service between the NZ camp and Cairo; Egyptian workmen helping construct the camp, and women doing the laundry; Divisional Signallers lined up on motor bikes. Battle practice and army life in the desert: anti-tank & anti-aircraft practice; bren guns; vehicle maintenance; blacksmiths; operating the telephone exchange; engineering work; sorting mail; manufacturing field oven; chopping wood for the oven; food preparation; boot mending; camp cinema; various games including cards, bowls, cricket, swimming, boxing; disinfecting plant for killing pests in soldiers' blankets; digging trenches; erecting tents. Ryburn family : Papers relating to Eric Ryburn's service in World War One

Description: Eric Ryburn, a law student at Otago University, sailed from New Zealand with the Third Reinforcements of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He served with the Otago Infantry Regiment and saw action at Gallipoli and later on the Western Front. On 14 July 1916 he was wounded and was hospitalised in England. When he was fit he undertook officer training and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant. Ryburn was killed in action at Ypres in Belgium, 12 October 1917. Description: Includes letters E S Bibby wrote to his family while on active service, diaries 1917-1919, military documents, photographs, and ephemera relating to his military service and correspondence with researchers about his recollections of aspects of World War One, 1987-1989. Also includes letters written to family members by his brother, Bruce, from military camps in New Zealand, 1918. Also includes photographs taken or collected by E S Bibby while on military service. Other photographs of Edward Stuart Bibby's war years and of Waipawa peace celebrations are at Library references PAColl-9161, PAColl-2838-1m, and PAColl-5636-1. Edward Stuart Bibby spent most of 1916 in military camps in New Zealand. He sailed for England with the 23rd Reinforcements for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force aboard the `Ruapehu', leaving Wellington on 14 March 1917. Shortly after arriving in Etaples training camp in France in July 1917 he developed pneumonia and was shipped to England where he spent time at New Zealand military hospitals in Walton, Hornchurch and Codford. After his recovery he was sent to Sling Camp and returned to Etaples in February, 1918. In the following month he rejoined the Otago Regiment and saw action during the remainder of the war during which time he was wounded. Description: Diaries kept by A Clive Johns, 9th Hawkes Bay Company, 1st Battalion, Wellington Infantry Brigade while on active service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War One. The diaries commence on 1 Jan 1917 while Johns was undergoing training at Sling Camp. On 12 February he landed in France where he saw action until 17 October when he was wounded by a shell. He was hospitalised in England at Brockenhurst. He left England for New Zealand aboard the hospital ship `Marama' on 7 April 1918. War diaries of J Doran McComish

Description: The diaries describe McComish's experience in the South African War and World War One McComish left Invercargill as a member of the 7th New Zealand Contingent on 12 March 1901 and saw action in the South African War, returning to New Zealand in May 1902. On 12 June 1915 he embarked on HMNS No 24 (Maunganui) with 5th Reinforcements for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was wounded in the Gallipoli Campaign and invalided back to New Zealand. Partially recovered he sailed with the 24th Reinforcements for the NZEF to England in April 1917 but after a medical examination he was deemed unfit to go to France. However in September 1918 he finally went there and joined the New Zealand Light Rail Operating Company. McComish returned to New Zealand in August 1919 aboard the `Tainui'. Quantity: 1 folder(s). After hospitalisation in England he was invalided back to New Zealand at the end of the year and spent 1917 and 1918 recuperating at Auckland Hospital and at a sanatorium in Rotorua. Letters from Clive Johns to his family while on active servive

Description: The letters, written to members of his family, begin when Johns was on HMNZT no 67 (Tofua) as part of the 18th Reinforcements of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. After landing at Plymouth on 28 Dec 1916 Johns was sent to Sling Military Camp. In Feb 1917 he embarked for France where he took part in action on the Western Front. In June 1917 he was wounded. After treatment at No 5 Convalesant Depot in France he subsequently returned to active service. On 17 October 1917 he was injured by a shell and treated at Number Four General Hospital in France. From here he was moved to Southwark Military Hospital, London and in January 1918 he was sent to No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst. John's last communication was a telegram sent to his family in Te Awamutu, 4 March 1918, which read `Returning shortly'. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Physical Description: Mss

Description: Folder contains correspondence from Stichbury home to his family during World War One. Includes letters to his parents (William and Hannah Stichbury), sisters (Myrtle, Eva and Elsa Stichbury) and brothers (Charlie, Martin and Tim [sic] Stichbury). Letters detail training in Zeitoun Camp and departure to Gallipoli via Port Mudros. Further letters detail the landing at ANZAC Cove 25 Apr 1915 and subsequent fighting with the Turkish Army. Stichbury wounded in action on 8 May 1915. Also includes letter to Mrs Stichbury from a family friend relating to Vincent Stichbury's injuries at Gallipoli. Further correspondence relates to Stichbury's recuperation in Malta and return to Gallipoli in August 1915 with a promotion to sergeant. Much of the correspondence relates to domestic family events back home in New Zealand and other family members involved fighting in the War. During Oct 1915 Stichbury falls ill with enteric sickness and is moved out to Lemnos, then onto Warminster in England to recover. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Autograph album belonging to Edith Audrey Beeton. Includes entries from 1908 to 1918, including the period when she was a nurse during the First World War at the St George's Hill Auxiliary Hospital, Weybridge, England. Includes sketches and autographs of New Zealand and Newfoundland soldiers. The approximately 185 autograph entries generally consist of the individual's name and service number, rank and unit, along with the date of the entry. Some also have a personal remark added, such as 'In remembrance of happy hours spent in Walton', by a member of the New Zealand Light Railway Operating Company. Ownership inscription on first free endpaper states 'Edith Audrey Beeton, July 30th 1908, 310 St James Court, Westminster, S.W.I.'
