Historic site 3km west of Waitara River, Taranaki County, North Taranaki. Hastily constructed but strong Te Kopiha pā was built by Te Ātiawa warriors led by Wiremu Kīngi Te Rangitāke Ātiawa on the night of 15 March 1860. At this fort, commonly known by British troops as the 'L' pa because of its shape, the first shots of the Taranaki War were fired on 17 March 1860, over the disputed sale of the Waitara Block.
