Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. Description: Map is hand coloured and probably the manuscript to the later published editions. The key to the map (from later editions is) 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' However, this not written on this edition. The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. Description: Topographic and military map from the New Zealand war of 1843 to 1847. Shows the road leading to Heke's Pa from Waka's Pa, three miles distant, along which the forces advanced. Rocket positions are marked, as is the position of the main body and reserves, also the position of the storming party. Numbers of men in each party are recorded. The valley of the charge on Kawiti is marked and the place where Kawiti first appeared is noted. Some topographic features are described. Pencilled note on top left: H.W.V. Warrington. Description: A base map of the area south of El Alamein which includes Lake Maghra has pencilled annotations of positions and a route possibly taken by the 28 Maori Battalion on 7th. and 8th. July 1942. Coverage of this topographic map is of the area beginning 25 kms. south of El Alamein at the trig point Alam Nayil, south to the El Taqa Plateau and to the wadi called Hatiyet Labraq Sabakha and across to Lake Maghra. No sealed roads cross this area but numerous motor tracks are marked, as are a few camel tracks, wadis and a pipeline referred to in a key. Includes contours. Topographic features are described in English. The 'Purple' and 'Red' grids are referred to, and instructions are given to work out grid references. Description: A base map of the the El Taqa area, south-west of El Alamein, has overprinting of Eighth Army artillery positions and defences and detailed notes refer to these. Military conventional signs are referred to in key on the reverse pf the map. Minefields are prominently marked. The terrain is described in English and a note states that the terrain is traversable by mechanical vehicles except where soft surfaces and steep slopes are marked. Coverage of this map is from the area north of the mountain Gebel Sanhur to Quyburet 'Awaila and Hatiyet el Taiha. The 'Purple' grid is referred to, and instructions are given to work out grid references. Includes map index to adjoining sheets and a glossary of names of features in romanised Arabic translated into English.
