Rehua Marae

An urban marae situated at 79 Springfield Road, St Albans, Christchurch. In 1952 this site hosted the Rehua Māori Apprentices Hostel which to catered for North Island Maori who moved to Christchurch for work under the Maori Trade Training Scheme. It was run jointly by Methodist Central Mission, Ngāi Tahu elders, and the Christchurch Polytechnic. Planning for a wharenui at Rehua began in 1952, construction and carving started in 1955, and in 1960 Te Whatu Manawa Māoritanga o Rehua was opened. Henare Toka from Kaipara did the carvings and local Kai Tahu and Pakeha women made the tukutuku panels. The wharenui is representative of all tribes. The marae is administered by the Rehua Maori Trust Board.
