Description: Poster issued in Britain by the Empire Marketing Board to promote imports from New Zealand. Shows a hilly New Zealand landscape, with a row of dairy cows in the immediate foreground, with lighter coloured cows in the flat paddock behind. There are red-roofed farm buildings on the left backed by a stand of trees. There is a rocky mountain in the centre distance. Linen-backed before arrival in the Library. Dated around 1927 because of similar posters in: Stephen Constantine's "'Buy and build'; the advertising posters of the Empire Marketing Board" (London, 1986). Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Soldiers in the foreground firing from behind trees at a pa in the centre and to left, being defended by Maori. A snow-covered volcanic cone, presumably intended to represent Mt Taranaki, lies above the tree-line in the background. The artist was English and specialised in military art. He was not an eye-witness of this event. It is possible that he used John Williams' sketch Ruapekapeka ... 1846 (E-320-010-q) as the basis for his painting.
