Description: Soldiers in the foreground firing from behind trees at a pa in the centre and to left, being defended by Maori. A snow-covered volcanic cone, presumably intended to represent Mt Taranaki, lies above the tree-line in the background. The artist was English and specialised in military art. He was not an eye-witness of this event. It is possible that he used John Williams' sketch Ruapekapeka ... 1846 (E-320-010-q) as the basis for his painting.
