Description: Shows head and shoulders portrait of an older gentleman in evening dress. The white chalk catches highlights of his face and the white evening shirt he is wearing. H Linley Richardson made a watercolour (gouache) sketch of Chief Savage Thomas Wilford, (he was Chief Savage around 1910), and this is likely to have been made at the same time. Description: Shows young Samoan woman sitting cross-legged on the ground. She is clothed in a skirt, possibly of grass, and has decoration in her hair, and two necklaces. She holds flowers in her right hand. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - A.H. Studd / 1898; Backing board recto - centre - (On label now detached and housed with item): The Samoan Taupo, price 6 pounds, 6 shillings / Signed and dated 1898 / A. H. Studd / 97 Cheyne Walk / Chelsea Studd was a close disciple of Whistler and Gauguin, and followed the latter to Tahiti in 1897. He visited Gauguin at Papeete before moving on to New Zealand to meet up with his brother Reginald with whom he made an extended trip to London via the islands of the South Seas. The present picture dates to his visit to the Samoan Islands in 1898 and depicts a 'taupo' or 'tapou', the title given to the daughter of a Samoan tribal chief, meaning 'ceremonial virgin'.
