Survey camps, rivers, waterfalls, family, and friends
Date: 1900-1901
From: Girdlestone, Hubert Earle, 1879-1918 : Albums relating to surveying, tramping and climbing
Reference: PA1-o-1225
Description: Many of the photographs were taken when H E Girdlestone was working as one of a survey team in the Taihape area. Views of the survey camps variously descibed as near Taihape, on the Hautapu River, as Oroua Bridge, Mataroa Township, Raketapauma, and Rangiwaea Block. He has included scenic views of native forest from some of these and other locations. Most notably he has taken photographs of many waterfalls on the rivers and streams in the area. Many of these are on the Turakina river. One called Rereaupiko Waterfall is formed where the Mangoiwa Stream falls into the Hautapu River. There are also views of the Whanganui River and one of a load of passengers on the "Wairere," a Whanganui River boat. Other scenic views have been taken in the Trentham area, Upper Hutt. These include a stream and native forest, the Hutt River, and cattle in pasture. Other locations around the Hutt Valley and Wellington are a bridge over a stream in the Wainuiomata water reserve, Young's Gardens Karori Wellington, and Views of the South coast looking towards and from Sinclair Head. There are local volunteer military units who participated in a marching competition on the 5th of October 1901. Those named are the "Highlanders", "Kelburns," "College Old Boys," "Civil Service," and "Post and Telegraph." Finally there are many images of family, friends and collegues. These include a group of adults and children at a house in Featherston and shows people playing croquet, members of a survey team in a tent, Girdlestone and a fellow worker engaged in chopping down a large forest tree, groups of young women and men in their sunday best, a group of men in fancy dress playing instruments, the children and teacher of Mataroa School photographed outside what is probably the school room in March 1901, and people in kayaks and canoes on the River Avon Christchurch.
