Group seated outside the carved meeting house at 'Marae-o-Hine' [Te Marae o Hinekakea],...

Date: 24 May 1909

From: Price, William Archer, 1866-1948 :Collection of post card negatives

Reference: 1/2-001945-G

Description: Group seated in front of the carved meeting house, Te Whatu o Tamainupo, 'Marae-o-Hine' [Te Marae o Hinekakea], at Riverhead, Auckland Region. The group includes four Maori women, one is holding a baby, and another, an older woman, is wearing a feather cloak; also four men, one is a European, and one of the Maori is wearing a feather cloak. In front of the two Maori wearing cloaks are two small children - a Maori boy and a European girl. Photograph taken by William A Price on 25 May 1909. Some of the group have been identified by ethnologist David Simmons as being: Mita Taupopoki (second from left), Mrs Graham (woman in cloak) for whom the house was built and also known as Taupiri Harongo, H J Hall (European man) son of Jean Lafitte of France and also known as Te Wharepurakau, Ripeka Tipuna (holding baby, a whangai from Hawai'i), and Pene Taui (far right). An alternative suggestion for the identities of some of the group has been provided Raewyn Graham, great granddaughter of Takurangi Hapi and George S Graham: the man standing on the left between the two women is Te Pataka Rangira Hapi, father-in-law of George Samuel Graham, who is standing in front of the door. Mr. Graham’s wife, Mrs Mary Magdalene Graham aka Takurangi Kahupeka Hapi, is the woman sitting holding their baby boy, Henare (Henry) Tuarangi Graham. Haki Hohaia is the man sitting wearing the white korowai/cloak, Mrs. Graham’s grandfather on her mother’s side. The little boy in front of Haki Hohaia is James Montrose Graham, oldest son of Mr and Mrs Graham. Information about the name of this marae was given to the Library by a member of the public, so this record was updated accordingly in October 2016. Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom right - Protd. W.A.P. 24.5.09; Photographer's title on negative - bottom left - Carved house at Marae-o-Hine.
