Description: Map showing topographical, cadastral and surveying features and recordings for Wellington City Streets from Manners Street on the left side of the map to Bolton and Kumutoto [which is probably the Lambton Quay end of Bowen Street] Streets on the right side of the map and showing Lambton Harbour at the base of the map. Streets identified between Manners and Kumutoto Streets are; Church, Willis and Boulcoot [Boulcott] Streets, Wellington Terrace, Customs House Quay, Featherson Street, Lambton Quay, Hunter, Grey, Panama, Johnston, Warring Taylor and Woodward Streets, Aurora Terrace and Bolton Street. The waterfront is identified by blue wash and jutting out into Lambton Harbour, opposite the intersection of Grey Street and Custom House Quay are wharves [now Queens Wharf]. A number of buildings are shown and identified as; the Criterion Hotel on the corner of Manners and Willis Streets, NZ Bank on the corner of Lambton and Custom House Quays, Supreme Court on Lambton Quay opposite Featherston Street, Pier Hotel at the corner of Custom House Quay and Grey Street, Post Office on the corner of Custom House Quay and Grey Street, Odd Fellow Hall at the corner of Grey Street and Lambton Quay and an area on the corner of Warring Taylor Street and Lambton Quay noted as `Jacob Joseph'. Next to this location is an area noted as `Grant to Forrester'. A drawing of a Roman style arch is shown on Wellington Terrace near Aurora Terrace which is the `Brick Bridge' [identified from the following mentioned Legend] and a shaded area on the corner of Lambton Quay and Kumutoto Street is identified as `Pro Treasurer'. The boundary of the Terrace District is drawn as a black dotted line. Land section numbers are shown, as well as surveying numbers along the streets. Some streets also show the location of the sewer lines and are noted as being 3 feet wide. A legend called `List of Bench Marks in Lambton Ward' is shown in the lower left corner of the map. It is divided into three columns identified as No., Description, and Datum Line - heights in feet above Datum line, and contains the following information numbered 1 to 16. 1. The Datum line figures are marked on the map in red ink, such as, B.M.N2, which refers to number 2 in the above written legend. Some of these red coloured figures have faded to the point of being almost unreadable. The map was drawn Jan-Feb 1867 and is also signed by R. M. Skeet [Robert Mixer Skeet], City Surveyor. The vertical scale is given on the map as being 50 feet to an inch which converts to scale 1: 600. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s).
