Description: Papers relating to World War One - comprised of two soldier's pay books, a postcard and a telegram - from the period 1915 to 1919. Mainly relating to the Williams family. Two pay books of James Neil Williams (Service Number 7/1928), who enlisted at the age of 25 in 1915 and served with the 8th Reinforcements and 14th Battery Squad, New Zealand Field Artillery. The first pay book ('Soldier's Pay Book for use on Active Service'), covers the period from September 1915 at Trentham, the voyage on troopship 36 (HMNZT 36) to Alexandria and from there to a military camp at Zeitoun, Egypt. Followed by voyage on the HMS 'Menominee' to Le Havre and the camp at Sanvic, France, and concludes after a period in the field in December 1916. The second pay book was issued in London on 29 May 1918 and covers the period spent at Walton-on-Thames, embarkation and return to New Zealand, ending in August 1919. Postcard addressed to "Cora and Charlie" from HMNZT No 19 at sea on 25 March 1915 and signed "Bob". The message makes reference to "a great day in Colombo" and states "We land at Suez tomorrow but do not know where we go after that." Postcard image shows an unidentified ship and island. Telegram from Sir James Allen, New Zealand Minister of Defence, received at 'New Zealand Post Office Telegraphs' office at Petone on 2 October 1918, with message of sympathy regarding the hospital admission of Stanley Horace Williams in England, and sends hopes for "a speedy recovery".
