Description: Kawakawa Hokianga coach stage, stables and horse hire, circa 1883. Shows two horse drawn carriages alongside the stables, with Knox and McCready's mail coach on the right. The man holding the reins is Thomas Knox. The group in the centre probably includes passengers. They stand alongside mail bags and a box labelled "NZ parcels post". Exact location unknown. Photographer unidentified. From the "The Northern Luminary" newspaper, 10 November 1883: "The arrival of Knox and McCready's mail coach in our midst has caused no little consternation amongst the populace of this generally quiet quarter. The coach is after the style of the general run of Cobb's coaches, yet on a more improved style, and will carry ten adult passengers comfortably. Upon the top are painted in good bold ornamental letters, "Northern Line", and along the side of the coach the words "Kawakawa and Horeke". The coach, drawn by four spanking horses, Mr T Knox handling the ribbons has been doing the town and environs during the past week in order to break the animals throughly in."
